Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Positive scan, sizequestion on "blobs"
- By mrsnewfie [se] Date 25.02.12 12:27 UTC
My girl was scanned yesterday and YES she is pregnant!! I am so happy and excited. But know to my question:

I thought it would be day 28 yesterday but the scanner told me, that according to the size of the blobs and the amount of fluid in them it is more likely 23 days. That is a range of whole 5 days
Have anyone here  experienced this? and the next time  your girl was scanned, did the blobsize follow the the days of pregnancy the scanner told you or had it changed?
Thanks!!

It is entriely possible she conceived 5 days after mating, especially if you mated her just before ovulation as it then takes  a further 2-4 days for the ova to develop and be ready for fertilisation. Canine semen from a young stud with good fertility can remain active in the bitches  track for 5-7 days.

This often accounts for those bitches who are reportedly LATE with delivery, pregnancy is consistent at about 63 days from ovulation so pinpointing ovulation by progesterone testing can give breeders more accurate dates to work with for whelping.

Progesterone levels can also help establish if a bitch should be showing signs of labour - once progesterones fall below 2 ng signs of labour should be evident. This can be useful in cases where inertia is suspected and can help establish if c section is required.

Just noted on another thread that you first mated on a progesterone on 3.7ng - ovulation does not occur until progesterones are 5ng so entirely possible for your dates to be out by 5 days. With a reeding of 3.7 a rough estimate of breed in 3 -5 days could be made but progesterones can hover just below ovulation levels for longer so retest usually recommend.

Hey and thanks for your answers. Progesterontesting and levels is very interesting and I am very curious on what day she is going to whelp based on her levels.

Yes the first breeding was in the evening on the same day( Friday) we got 3,7 ng on her progesteron in the morning. She  rises very quickly so this time breeding started early or else we would  probably have missed her again.

But back to my  "blobsize"question again  se above!!

Thankfull for answers

oh well, when I had my bitch scanned last time, she was day 35 from mating, the scanner told me that due to the size etc of the blobs, she was only day 32............................she whelped exactly on day 63 according to the scanner, not the day of mating

Would be inclined to trust the scan redates but be ready earlier :) Intersted to know did you try you bitch last time on a progesterone of 16.7 ng ? By my rule of thumb this should have been ok with a breeding window of 0-2 days. The sort of value I general breed on.

Yayy!!!  That's brilliant news!  So very pleased for you!

Jolene;MM okej so your scanner was right. Well my girls next scan is on thursday and if  it still looks early I will go by that.

klb: My girls progesteronlevel rised very quickly  from 3,7 ng Friday to 16,7 on Tuesday. She was breed Monday and Tuesday-
The interest from the male was not big but he did his "duty" but she did not get pregnant.  Today I am pretty shure it was tro late.

The owner of the stud we used this time always start breeding at around 5 ng ( which I think my girl was at on Friday) She goes by both experience and a danish book about dogbreeding where it says that ovulation occurs at about 2,5-4 ng. All bitches except one has become pregnant when coming to her and her studdogs for breeding. So for me it seems that 5ng is a guideline with 1-2 ng + or -when it comes to ovulation.

Thank you Zajak!!! I have been doing the happy dance since yesterday. Beginning to be a little "tired" now  LOL but still very very happy. Hope everything goes well for you when breeding your girl next time.

I had a bitch palpated at day 28 from mating and the vet who is very god at it said they did not feel that advanced more like 23 days, and she whelped 4 days late where usually my girls go a little early, the litter was smaller side.

Zajak: will do.

Brainless: Did not know that  you also could estimate age/days via palpation but as you said your vet. is god at it.  It more and more sounds like my scanner has right in her 23days-estimation. Well just have to wait and se.
