Topic Dog Boards / Health / Zuma in 'Hospital'
- By tatty-ead [gb] Date 22.02.12 16:55 UTC
Fingers crossed for us please.
Zuma is currently in 'hospital' having some tests. He ate fine on Saturday but since then he has been having problems, Sun 1st feed ate half and brought it straight back up, 2nd feed no problem, Monday 1st ate half 2nd ate half and brought it straight back up, Tues am had 2 mini biscuits and back up 1/2 hr later, Vet appt had xrays - inconclusive - they said light feed in evening ... no problem. He isn't 'ill' but a bit subdued and just not right.
They referred him to Dick White hospital in Newmarket and I left him there at 3pm...House is EMPTY!!! :-( :-(
Vet at DW had good look and exam and his belly seems a bit tender so going to do another xray and scan/ultra sound etc today and ring me later.
It was bad enough him being in all yesterday afternoon but he is in overnight at least at DW.

Keeping everything crossed for a good out come.

How old is he?
- By sillysue Date 22.02.12 18:22 UTC
He's in a good place, Dick White is an amazing place and they have saved the lives of 2 of my dogs over the last few years - wonderful people there I trust completely, so fingers crossed for you.

Hope he's home soon feeling better.

I sympathise with him being away overnight, when Daisy was a pup she had to stay in at the vet school in Glasgow overnight for an MRI, I felt awful leaving her there, I seem to remember being back to pick her up at the crack of dawn lol.

Fingers crossed it is nothing too serious x

Quick update..........just had phone call from them, Xray doesn't show any foreign body :-) , could be food of some sort (digestible material ? - can't remember the exact phrase used) causing it or Gastritis but lots of gas in stomach which meant a not very clear scan so doing another scan in morning, if they still can't see much they will then consider doing an endoscopy to look at stomach wall etc. Fingers still crossed here as well as legs, eyes and anything else
Edited to add..........He will be 5 in July

Fingers toes and paws crossed for you. I hate leaving a dog overnight anywhere, however he is in good hands. hope he is home again soon where he belongs.

Sending positive vibes Chris.  I'm glad that he's in the best possible hands.  Which is some consolation.  I know how the hours will drag with an empty house.  Good Luck!  :-)

Well I collected him at 5pm, went in, someone brought him through and when he saw us he started..............those of you with shepherds will know the noise.........a VERY loud screaming wingey whine............and didn't stop till OH took him out to the car. The Vet poor love couldn't get a word in for the noise!!!
He is home with Zantac and Antepsin and a diagnosis of acute gastritis.

Anyone with experience of this, is he likely to get repeat attacks, anything to avoid etc???

Thanks for all the crossed fingers and good wishes,
Chris

Thats good news.

When you said he is home with Zantac and Antepepsin my first thought was what unusual names for dogs, then the penny dropped that this was his meds.

I did an Altzheimer test yesterday and I don't have it, honest.

so pleased to hear your good news :-)

I am so glad that he is home.  I would have loved to hear his commotion!  :-)

Probably not the same problems at all, but my Border Collie had awful intestinal problems for 8 months as a youngster.  I have never taken him off Chappie because I don't want to rock the boat!

I hope your boy soon feels better.

In general acute means an episode where as chronic means on going so hopefully it will prove to be a one off. GSDs are prone to having sensitive stomachs so he may have recurring episodes and I always found the very best food for the GSD is original Chappie tinned and fed with a little extra hound meal and the occasional small amount to tripe.

My GSD after spending 2 days in Dick White was diagnosed with inflamm. bowel disease which was ongoing. I was advised to feed her either JWB or tinned Chappie original. I went for the JWB for ease ( less smell ) and it worked a treat although I did put a little taster topping of the Chappie on the top, so I suppose it was a combination, but it really did calm things down.
ps I know the squeal you mentioned that can come only from a GSD - bless em!

So glad that you have him home again.
One of my previous Shepherds had the art of singing and howlig like no other when she was excited
Our vet once offered to sell cabaret tickets to hear Inga sing it was pure excitement and she always greeted him like a long lost friend.
Hope your boy continues to improve,

Zantac would be quite a good name

1st GSD was Zigi, 2nd was Zan and this one is Zuma............I will have to remember Zantac if there is a 4th :-D :-D

He has been on Burns pork and potato for about 3 yrs with dollop of chappie /bit left from roast /tin sardines on top but debating about changing him........he came home with Royal canine sensitive tins for 3 days then I am to put him on tin chappie and then start adding kibble so may just try chappie kibble and see how he does.
Which JWB do you you feed, as they do a grain free meat + veg one I think?

My dog had all types of problems with meat or chicken and they suggested Turkey and Rice JWB, this worked so I didn't try any of the others. She also couldn't tolerate anything with fish and potato, so they felt that turkey was something she hadn't built a resistance to, for this reason it was the first one to try.
