Topic Dog Boards / Health / Hip scores- vets opinion

Has anyone had a vet give a bad outlook for hip score, but when they have come back from the BVA, they were ok? I  had a bitch hip scored years ago and was told to expect a poor result. However, they came out below breed average. I am awaiting scores back for another bitch who has generations of good hip scores behind her. Guess what? I have been told the same thing, by the same vet who did my last ones. The vet is an osteo vet, and I just wondering if some vets class anything other than perfect as bad??

Over the years I have come to the conclusion that most vet know little about hips, breeding and many of the health tests we all consider necessary.

this is why there's a panel - so hopefully the opinions are the same for all xrays :-)
My vets have been ok so far - although when I took two in they said one was much more even than the other which wasn't as good... fair enough the even one was more even - 7:7 but the other was 4:6

Depends upon the individual vet. One said to me 'I don't like the look of those hips....', they came back as bang on the breed average and balanced on each side.

A friend of mine had a vet look at her dog's x rays and said not good at all.  He came back as 8-8 so total 16 (breed average 19 at the time).

Many years ago I had one of my girls xrayed and the vet was very pessimistic about the score we'd get - she got 2:2 :)

A few years later, different vet, another bitch xrayed and the vet said the hips looked fine.I looked and could see a difference between the 2 hips -she'd been knocked down as a youngster. She scored 24:3.

When I took my girl for her x-rays and asked my vet what his opinion was his response was ''you're paying for the BVA opinion not mine, my job is to give you the best possible x-rays that I can'' he did and the results were good

Yes my vet asked me if I wanted the plates sent off as they weren't great and another vet told me "no breeding"' my reply was "what about the rest of the dog?" I didn't think they looked too bad and got them sent off as I needed the proper score, they came back on the breed average.

I will buck the trend here. The vet I use for HSing ( not my regular vet) has never, in 12 years, with any dog I own, I bred or friends dogs, been more then 1 or 2 points out with his guess. One of my breeding went there only last month and he guessed 2/3, the dog came back 2/4. I am just waiting for one of mine ( his sister) to come back as well as another brother so hopefully he will be spot on again. he is also right on the high side too, in 2004 I had two litter sisters scored, he guessed 6/5 for one, she was 5/5 and he guessed 6/19 for the other, she was 6/15 ( due to injury). I always feel relieved when I come out of the surgery that even if he is a few points out if he says it is an ok score, it will be.

I guess in most cases its due to the fact that vets don't know all of the breed averages - and after all - any score is a form of HD - So in their opinion any score is not good !

Our breed has a high average, but many of us would not reed from a dog unless it is way under

I am hoping this is the case. I think as an osteo vet, his standards are very high and anything over single figures would be considered bad. Does anyone know the turn around time for the bva scoring??
