What are your thoughts on mating a bitch to a male which has been used the day before with another bitch? Is it worth still using him?

yes i dont see any problems as long as hes had 24h rest :-)

I would be a little concerned about the increased chance fo any infection being passed onto the bitch as she woudl encounter any pathogens the dog and otehr bitch may have encountered, but the risk is just as great to the stud.

Also when was the toehr bitc h first mated, ahs the dog been workign for more than three days already?

I would certainly want a second mating,  and this time before the other bitch, assuming she is to return to him again

I too would be concerned about infection, if I had no other option then I would get my bitch covered with a course of antibiotics and CHV vac post mating and 10 days before pups were due, she may miss due to the close matings but I wouldn't want to risk my bitches chance for future breeding attempts.

I get my girls tested for brucellosis, CHV and canine venereal tumor before mating. The stud owners whose dogs I used ask for this before the mating, and have their dogs tested regularly. It costs me around 120EUR to have this done, but is a lot less expensive and and distressing than losing a litter, or having a stud become sterile.

Doing all that testing is fine but it depends on all parties involved doing the same and getting negative results back.

If time is short then protecting your bitch, her possible pups and future breeding capabilities is what is needed.

An experienced breeder friend of mine had a stillborn litter for no obvious reason 8 days early, they put it down to one of those things, the following year they mated her to another stud and everything was going fine till she tried to push the pups out and she was screaming and then refused to push despite obvious contractions, took her to the vet and internal exam found strictures high up in her vagina, C/Section delivered 2 live pups, one died 2 weeks later from herpes and the other one survived.

It is thought that she picked up the herpes infection when mated to an outside stud for the first litter, it killed the pups before birth and the infection then caused the vaginal strictures, she was never bred from again and the home stud that had sired the second litter was given a thorough infection screen which thankfully all came back normal, he has gone on to sire several litters of live pups since.

So this is why I would be wary of using a stud who is frequently used or in this case being shared between 2 bitches at the same time.

Totally agree.  I don't allow my boys to be used on more than one bitch at a time.  I have always thought their would be far more chance of infections and diseases.

However, I do know some top breeders that allow their dogs to mate several bitches a week.  It just isn't for me.

Nice little money earner for some.

The thing is if you are using a stud from a well respected and successful kennel, you don't like to ask if the dog in question is being used on another bitch that same week. I wouldn't like to anyway, but now I feel worried. My vet used to allow bitches a low dose of synulox to cover them around the time of mating, but this is no longer the case.

But why would you not ask?
Surely you will want to know such detail in order to think the "bigger picture"? wether it is the same week or next month or year.
I would actually expect to be informed if the stud will be mating with another bitch at the same period so I'm aware of possible increased risks etc

I always ask what other mating plans the dog has for the future.
It is of course up to the stud owner if they will disclose such detail, I would kind of expect they would do - Unless the bitch owner has said not to tell anybody...
Even then I have been told exactly that, there is a plan but the bitch owner does not wish the details to be out in open yet.

I'm using a dog next month and have already agreed somebody else who is using the same dog to come and view my pups as we have ours before they do :)...
and I can go and see their pups once they are born to get a better idea of what the stud might have thrown in each litter.
Learning experience for both :)

I too would want to know the history of the dogs mating in the past, not details of each bitches name, but how successful he was in getting said bitches in whelp and what the ratio of bitches to dogs produced, the outside stud I used produced 4 bitches out of 5 pups in his first litter, 2 out of 3 bitches in my litter and has gone on to produce more bitches to dogs, I am hoping his son follows in his footsteps.

I would also want to know when the dog was last used and may rethink my decision if he is being used on another bitch at the same time.
