Topic Dog Boards / General / What if you don't like your new kennel name?
- By mcmanigan773 [gb] Date 17.02.12 16:37 UTC
Ok, might sound odd but a few weeks ago we put in an application for our own kennel name (no plans to breed but we wanted to secure the name incase we do in future). We ended up with our second/third choice (can't remember which) and I'm really disappointed as I don't like it now. As it isn't finalised yet does anyone know if you can change it?
- By JeanSW Date 17.02.12 16:56 UTC
No, but phone them to get advice please!  :-)

I got my 3rd choice too, years ago now.  But it was (I thought) a totally made up name that doesn't mean anything.

I was already using my new affix when I found out that it was actually the name of an amoeba!

Phone them!!

Even if you never breed, it is always nice to add your own name to any dog that you buy.

Would not be asking here but phoning the KC to ask them. As you can take out 2 names you can no doubt cancel the present one and start again.
- By Goldmali Date 17.02.12 17:12 UTC
Goldmali was my third choice and I HATED it and wanted to change it. Then thought about it for a few days and got used to it.

Of course, NOW I wish I'd picked something totally different (not breed related), and my first and second choices wouldn't have been any better. (Maligold and Malingold.) But hindsight is a great thing. :)

Thanks, Ill phone them first thing monday morning, that way ill have had a few days to be sure I really don't like it, hopefully we can cancel it if we decide we don't and we'll have to think of something else.

mcmanigan, I'm so sorry you didn't get the choice you wanted :-( Trying out the name for a few days may indeed change your mind.

I too have just received my kennel name, with no plans to breed. Like you, I wanted to secure the name. I thought of names for over a year, then one day last month it just came to me and I applied straight away! I didn't even bother putting a 2nd or 3rd choice as I knew nothing else would do. I am now waiting for payday so I can re-register my boy! :-)

If you are making up a word it is always worth Googleing it :)
I made up a word that came across to be a name of a kennel in Europe so of course did not want that so there is no room for confusion...
Another one brought up loads of pictures of naked ladies as it was a name of a pornstar :)

In the end I filled in the forms at Crufts and got them to check my choices at KC stand, which all were ok (they were very surprised I had managed to get all that seemed ok at quick check :) )
We did end up getting our first choice, although at the time I thought maybe I liked the second choice better after all but now I like what we got - Short and simple :)

I had to do this. I was struggling to find a name I liked. I must have submitted about 50! Scraping the bottom of the barrel I chose an old family name which I thought I liked but decided I didn't once it was approved. My father also was't too happy.  I emailed the KC and asked to change my choice as my father objected to my using the name for dogs. They were quite happy to change it again and I eventually got an affix I like.

I changed mine, I got my 3rd choice and when I saw it on paper I didn't like it. KC let me change it but that was some years ago.
Good luck
Paula

Oh do call them - I got my kennel name years before we bred so that it could be our dogs 'family name' - every dog we've owned has had the kennel name attached.

We got the name we wanted and I still love it to this day,and when we had pups I was so proud when I picked the names - even though some got turned down :-(

I'm still not entirely happy with mine, I wanted to use the same as our website address and it's half of my name and half of hubby's, but the KC wouldn't allow it, but they were ok when I added 'ex' to the end of it. It's not as good as the original name would have been, I wonder (as affixes etc go out of use) if they could tell me if my original choice would ever be allowed in the future. But then I'd have to change everyone's names! :-)

Good strategy. If it's not allowed, you can think again. To the OP, good luck with your quest to get it changed. I know someone who hated hers the minute it was granted. She's now registered several litters. Guess what - she still hates it!!

I like that - it's why I would like one... and also to 'secure' a name I like, would be gutted if anyone else took it (to my knowledge it's not taken and is acceptable).

And that is what I would do, too. If I can't have the one I want, I'd like plenty of time to think of something I do want :)

And I thought I was the only one who dislikes their kennel name!

I keep trying to think of reasons why it suits us...... but I'm still not convinced!

I must admit I didn't realise you could send it off with only 1 choice added. I thought as their were 6 boxes they all had to be filled and we didn't think too much about the ones further down as we thought we'd get 1 or 2. We have had a discussion today and have come up with 2 alternatives that we both like and would be happy to add to the end of our dogs names so ill phone the KC on monday morning and fingers crossed we can change to one of those. :)
- By mcmanigan773 [gb] Date 20.02.12 12:51 UTC
Good news, I phoned this morning and explained. They said if I sent the certificate back with a covering letter and the alternative name (and pay a fee of £25) I can change it-providing the new name is allowed. They did do a quick check on the phone and could see no reason why not.

>(and pay a fee of £25)

I really can't believe that.  Not knowing what we pay to register an affix in the first place.  What a nerve!
- By Stooge Date 20.02.12 13:04 UTC
It seems pretty comparable with other adminstration fees for alterations, insurance companies etc
- By Nova Date 20.02.12 14:04 UTC
Well Jean SW £25 does not pay for much of someone's time - would think even the KC staff will want to be paid even if they do like dogs.
- By Paula Dal [gb] Date 20.02.12 14:08 UTC
Great! hope you get what you want this time :-)
- By cavlover Date 20.02.12 19:21 UTC
Mine was about my 6 th choice, and I was disappointed as it wasn't one that was anything personal to me at all. But I soon got used to it (well, I believed I was stuck with it !) and I do like it, 5 years on. That said, if I had my time over again I would have wanted it to be something specific to me eg. combination of parts of my children's names (all of which were actually refused at the time though).
- By mcmanigan773 [gb] Date 25.02.12 14:32 UTC
Yay! Got our first choice (of the second lot), It came this morning :)
- By killickchick Date 25.02.12 15:20 UTC
Great news! :D
