Topic Dog Boards / General / Question for Nova :)
- By BaileyandDylan [gb] Date 15.02.12 22:42 UTC
Hi this is my first post been lurking for well over a year now though lol.
Just a little question for Nova hope you don't mind. I read on one of your posts that you had one of your dogs on HRT and was just wondering whether it helped to stop other male dogs pestering him in the sense of trying to mate with him. The reason I'm asking is because my dog Bailey recieves a lot of unwanted attention from other males and its getting to the point where he is now having a go at these dogs, I know that he more than within his rights to do this especially when they don't take heed of his initial warnings but its caused us a few problems on walks and my other adolescent dog will just not leave him alone at the moment which is causing all 3 of us a lot of stress.
So any help or advice would be really appreacitaed :)

Hi Karly, yes it did help although my circumstances were somewhat different to yours. At the time apart from one bitch I kept all male dogs so having one male amongst the group that smelt female was not good - not for the castrated dog that was being bonked by all and sundry - not good for the group and they all claimed him as their own & the bitch was unsettled by it as well.

So yes in his case it was a big help although not cheap, would ask your vet for a course of testosterone replacement and see if it helps you will need to give it about 12 week to know but if it does then it is a big relief for all concerned.

There were other problems connected with his being castrated some were unaffected by the medication but other did improve for instance he suffered from a poor immunity system and that did improve but did not recover.

Hi Nova, thank you for getting back to me. Its good to hear that the testosterone may help with this and if it does it will be a great relief :)

I shall book him an appointment at the vets next week, and will let you know how I get on. Cost shouldn't be a problem just means I'll go without new clothes for another year lol.

The poor boy has got a lot of other problems as well but I don't think they're related to the castration.

I just wish I'd never had him castrated in the first place but he was my first dog and I was naive at the time and just went along with the vets advice. I didn't know then what I know now, this forum has been such a great help to me and has benefited my boys so much.

So again I would just like to say thank you :)

Do hope you find it of help and your boy gets some relief from unwanted attention, it must be so tiresome at least with a bitch it is only for a short period.

Yes my boy had many other problems as well but it was his lowered immunity and skin condition that was the biggest problem for him, he also developed allergy problems and we always worried when we gave him worming pills as we never knew what the effect may be but I don't know if this later problem was connected to the castration or not as it seemed to develop when he was about 3 years old.
