Topic Dog Boards / Health / Sudden dandruff on black dog
- By tina s [gb] Date 14.02.12 13:47 UTC
my black schnauzer age 7 and a half has suddenly come out in dandruff. it just suddenly started for no reason. she isnt stressed any more than usual and hasnt changed her diet or anything.
the groomer stripped her after i found the dandruff and its not as bad now her outer coat is gone.
she doesnt seem to be itching it and i cant find any patches of dry skin.
i have started her on a multivitamin with primrose oil and sprayed her with tee tree oil.
any ideas or should i take her to the vet?
thanks

In a stripped Scnauzer jacket this is common, I use a bristle brush and regularly card with chalk to get it out. I never see it on my clipped Minis but see it after a hard carding through on my stripped puppy. Not entirely sure why! Have you looked at Witch Hazel? This works will in a spray on a stripped jacket to help calm the skin.

With chalking before you card through and then a bristle brush (I use a good boar bristle brush that's quite firm to bring that oil back up over the coat to prevent blackheads from oil settling on the skin) it should help significantly as chalk also helps clean the coat. It's possible the cold is giving her dry skin, I would check her skin really thoroughly to check there are no areas of irritation. Perhaps a visit to the vet if it doesn't clear up. xx

Could the ingredients have changed in her food.

This could be because the formulation has been 'new and improved'.

Some brands use a fixed recipe, and others list more vaguely and then can change what goes into the food based on the cost and availability of raw materials.
