Couldnt think of a better title (or which section this should be in)!

My girl had a litter nearly 15 weeks ago, she has gone from a lovely full, thick coat to almost bald, she looks dreadful!
I know its normal for them to drop their coat after a litter but I didnt dream it would be this bad!

Just wondered how long it normally takes for them to be back in full coat? and if there is anything I can do to help..

thanks

My bitch was in full show coat before mating and now, with her puppy just six months this week, is what I consider showable again.
A big coat though, whereas my boxers had enough over the bald bits in 3-4 months.

As for additives: the argument that adding stuff to an otherwise healthy diet can speed up hair growth is unproven.

I have a breed with a double coat.  I showed my Inka at Southern counties 15 weeks after her pups and she was NAKED and it made her seem light in Bone.

You would be lucky generally to have a bitch in decent coat by 5 months after her litter, by which time they are likely to be in season so I would say they should look fine by the time pups are 6 months old.

This is why our show girls loose several years of their show lives if bred from :)  From season to 6 months after whelping is roughly 9 months.

Thanks for the replies. My girl is a rough coated border collie and I work her so I dont have to worry about her being ready for the showring, at least I now have a time frame for when she will look 'normal' again!

I always believe lots of baths help the cycle.  It doesn't grow new coat but it will get rid of the dead coat quicker.  Loads of brushing to remove the dead coat too if you don't like to bath very often.  Dorwest herbs have vitamins that supposidly help re-growth but I don't know how good they would be.

Has anyone ver noticed it before a season?

We went on holiday for a week left the dogs at home with dog walkers and house sitters but my youngest bitch seems to have dropped body weight and coat condition in that week. She was a little disturbed by it all but doesn't seem to be improving and she's due a season in around a month, hormonal??

i have one spitz bitch that drops her coat 8 weeks before a season and theother spitz drops it after her season so yes sometimes when  a season is due it can happen

Normally around 6 months after puppies are born (long coated breed)
