Hi had my bitch spayed 13 Days ago first week went well then this week on day 9 started to see blood on her bedding more of a smear very dark in colour it's now gone to a pale pink and that too is like a smear...... it's a little like you would see if she was at the end of her season...... only finding blood on her bed nowhere else
Yesterday she had mucus coming away from her.... that seems to have stopped now though
She is eating and drinking as normal, everything is fine toilet wise and she is full of life ........when I showed my vet her cover with the blood on he said it was fine but if this was still happening in 10 days' time to bring her back and he would examine her
Just wanted to know if anyone else had seen this before

How long since her last season?  Has she recently had a litter?

I would get her looked at by the vet as may be post op infection which typically starts 8-10 days post op.

She may also have a UTI as her urethra is situated in the vagina and therefore near where the uterus has been removed from.

I would not have been happy at the vets suggestion.  I would be wanting him to check her over.  Did he even take her temperature to see if infection was a possibility?

My bitch was recently spayed and we had the same thing with the brownish blood.  My vet also said it was normal and she seems to have stopped now and we are post-op 24 days.  If she goes off her food or seems unwell, I would take her back but other than that, I think the slight blood loss is normal.

I would want to know where the blood was coming from, the uterine cavity is no longer there, Yes some blood in the vagina from during the surgery but should be old blood[dark in colour]by day 2, if it is fresh blood then either the area where the cervix joins the vagina has not been sealed off[sutured/diathermied] or there is bleeding in the pelvic cavity which is finding a way out via the vagina, any collection of bodily fluids can become infected causing peritonitis.

Keep a look out for raised Temp, her wound looking red and any swelling of the abdomen, if seen then back to the vets ASAP.

I hope that none of the above applies to your girl and she is back to normal soon.

You could also take her temp to make sure their is no fever :-)

I had the very same with one of our bitches. She started to bleed 9 days post spay and it carried on for 3 weeks ....all the time getting lighter. She was monitered by the vet throughout and had a course of anti biotics just in case but she was fine....did get me in a bit of a tiz at the time though as never had this with previous bitches.
