Does anyone know if we take our boy to show in France, will we still have to see a vet in France before travelling back to the U.K?As far as I understand, after a vet administers flea treatment, you have 120 hours to get home, and we are going on a Saturday, and coming back on a Monday hopefully,so wondered if our own vet could administer the treatment?.My hubby took our boy for his rabies jab and forgot to ask the vet about it.

you don't need flea treatment, but you do need a specific tape worming dose, once administered yes you have 5 days to get back into UK so if you're going to be within that time your own vet will be fine.

Thanks alot,I will definately check before we go,dont want my boy stuck in France.

it's just the time element - it's two to five days for a tape worming dose and after 21 days from the rabies vaccination... that's it!

> it's two to five days for a tape worming dose

Surely it is still 24 hours but extended to five days?

DEFRA site says

Tapeworm treatment - (dogs only): before entering the UK, all pet dogs (including assistance dogs) must be treated for tapeworm. The treatment must be administered by a vet not less than 24 hours and not more than 120 hours (1-5 days) before its scheduled arrival time in the UK. There is no mandatory requirement for tick treatment. No treatment is required for dogs entering the UK from Finland, Ireland or Malta).

So no need to visit vet in France if within the  5 day limit before re entry to UK ? If true, this is really good news because I've been paying 60 euros just for a drontal tablet and a few drops of Frontline at the vet in France

sorry yes 1-5 days (finger slipped earlier - note to self to read before pressing send!)  of course it's true.... no need for flea treatment from 1st January for the pet passport, just the tape worming and rabies (21days) jab, so if you're going there and back in the time you don't need a vet over there.

My boy had his rabies jab on Tuesday, going for his boosters in 2 weeks time. Not having to find a vet in France is going to be so much easier to go to shows!,this is only our 2nd venture abroad, and going by Eurotunnel this time, can't wait.

When we are over in France we shop around as you cannot believe how much different their charges are. As I always take 4 dogs it can really mount up so I go in and ask how much before booking appointment and if they want your business they will be careful about what they charge. I have paid over 40 euros a dog and around 25 euros a dog at different Vets. Of course that is when you needed both treatments

I am going on a Saturday, showing on Sun day, then returning home on the Monday,so if my boy sees my vet on the Friday,he'll be ok to get there and back, without the need of a French vet??
- By drover [gb] Date 04.02.12 16:41 UTC
Yes, you will be fine just seeing your vet on friday and coming back on monday.
