Topic Dog Boards / General / Poodle?

Hi guys

Is there any poodle breeders on here, I'm a dog groomer and see loads of poodles but can't seem to find a decent shampoo, they also seem to heavy and not very conditioning on the hair?

Also I have one toy poodle inparticular who's hair is really really fine, after ten mins out the salon her hair starts to flop and curl again it just has no body and wondered if there was any products you use which could help?

Any help appreciated

Not a dog groomer.. just someone who likes grooming dogs!

I assume you mean conditioner - a shampoo won't condition.... what conditioner are you using at the moment - I have the opposite trouble, I am always looking out for conditioners that will weigh down a fine fluffy silky coat (hard to describe, shes an afghan x saluki) and rarely any I've tried are heavy enough!

Also what sort of cut are you trying to achieve on this particular dog - it may be that her coat is not correct and you won't ever achieve what the client wants, or perhaps it is a little long, and taking it shorter would let it stand up/out more than it currently does?

I have to say from my experiences around the showring, those amazing, eye-catching Poodles in the ring are usually (ducks from the incoming masses of irate poodle people) wearing several cans of heavy duty 'strong  hold' hair spray to achieve and keep that volume in the coat. It wouldn't be the first time I have come across an owner attempting to achieve something with just a cut, shampoo and condition that is in reality, achieved with what is practically spray on glue, or expecting a dog to naturally look like those in the show-ring.

MD-10, best shampoo and conditioner I have found.
If you google it, then email Noriko, she will advise you what she thinks is best. She is really helpful.
Mine have a very thick curly long coat, and until I used MD-10 I did struggle.

Another MD-10 fan here.  Only problem you will have is that the Poodle coat is supposed to curl so could happen with this shampoo as I use it to get my Spanish coats curly!

This is a useful post as I'd been meaning to ask a similar question! Got my first 2 poodles booked in since I was at college, coming next week. I wondered whether using the same 'harsh coat' shampoo, (seaweed & cucumber from Groomers) I use for terriers would help the coat have some body, or whether just the all purpose teatree I use if I have a new dog in would be better. Not the silky coat shampoo I use on my spaniels, I know! :-)

That shampoo is fine if the dog has a short cut, mine is in lamb trim and I find it cleans the coat well and the finish is crisp but not harsh.

Excellent thanks, yes forgot to say it was just for a lamb trim for pets. :-)

Surely the use of such hairstyling products for the show ring is banned ?

I thought it was too, but when I went to a poodle show for a look around I saw a man spraying a liquid from a pressurised canister (!) onto his standard poodle .

The "no products " rule is still in force, but testing is on hold while the KC review the viabiity of testing and products involved.  The majority of the show poodle world came together to point out that as they all use product to hold the topknot no unfair advantage was being taken by anyone.  It was also pointed out to the KC that the testing methods were far from foolproof.    Result of the meeting at Stoneleigh last year was that  all submissions would be considered and expert advice was being sort on the testing porcedure and validity.
