Hi everyone, please kindly give you advices as I'm facing a very difficult situation.
I have booked a yorkie puppy girl from a breeder who produced many many champion from her bloodline. I clearly stated my purpose at the very beginning that I want a good size show quality puppy, so I can show and breed from her as well.
I have requested the puppy's weight 3 times from the breeder:
1st time when puppy was 3weeks old: 450g
2nd time when pupppy was 7weeks old: 900g
3rd time when puppy was 3days to 11weeks: 1kg
I was very happy about her size the first two time, but very shock about the puppy's grwoing process when she is about 11weeks. Only gained 100g in 4weeks?????? That doesn't sound right to me at all.....how come only put on 100g in 4weeks time?????
According to the 'yorkie weight chart' she could grow to 5pound, acceptable size to breed. However, her growing process in the past 4weeks make me very concern about her size. I have 2 yorkies, the weight chart is quite accurate to estimate their size. Her price is 3-4 times more than a normal puppy, sure you can understand no one wants to pay for somthing is not what they looking for, right?
I have to get back to the breeder at Thur the very latest, so decision, decision.....CAn anyone please help to estimate her size. Thanks Thanks Thanks
I have been waiting 4months for this puppy, I'm very serious about her and been told by the breeder that she would be 5pounds. Should I trust the breeder????????
Anyone's advices and suggestion are welcome. Thanks again
P.s this is the last litter from that breeder, she will not breed anymore, so I have no chance to get another one from her
And she is from other state, Im unable to go there and see the puppy's parents
I have no idea of estimated weight gain of a Yorkie - I'm sure someone can help more than I.
Re;- Her price is 3-4 times more than a normal puppy, sure you can understand no one wants to pay for somthing is not what they looking for, right? Would you really pay that much more for a pup from a quality kennel? I certainly wouldn't - I have recently bought in a pup from a very well known/experienced show kennel and she was only a little more than I thought the going average rate for a pup. There are no guarantees in life and if I was paying that much more for a pup, would certainly want one!!

Weight gain slows down as they become more active and burn off the calories, how does her weight compare to others in the litter?
The only way to know if the pup is under weight is get your hands on it and if you can feel the ribs without poking too hard then they are usually spot on, gaining too quickly can put a strain on the immature bones and joints.
She is already over 2lbs in weight so has less than 3lbs to gain to reach the optimum weight and she won't be bred from till nearer 2 yrs old I presume.
Hopefully someone who has the breed will be able to give more breed specific info.
Keep us posted on how things go
Would you really pay that much more for a pup from a quality kennel?I assumed it was because it is a pup for showing. Certainly in some breeds the price is higher for a show prospect bitch than for a pet puppy. Especially in the smaller toybreeds that have small litters -bitch pups as show prospects are like hens' teeth there as most are kept. But also different countries may have different ways of doing things.
yes, yorkie is like GOLD in Australia, very hard to find and breeders are not easily sell one is registered to breed and show, very annoying....
I got my first yorkie in the UK and bred her once, things are very different here and there.

I would never buy from a breeder who differentiated on price between puppies, they all cost the same to rear (even mismarked or non standard colours, though a light reduction may be usual in such breeds where this occurs), and the most that can be said of a young puppy is that it shows promise.
As the breeder should be aiming to breed dogs that are good enough to meet the show standard then there should be no 'premium' on the ones showing more promise.
Even then unless buying an adult in toys especially the pups may go oversize.
Very sadly, that's how things working in Australia.
Can anyone please advice on her weight.......Thx

Not my breed sorry - but could you Google some UK breeders and email them for weight advice? I'm sure you'd find someone willing to help. Also, just in case your plans fall through, you might make some good links enabling you to import from the UK instead
Good luck :)

Is it? There are certainly just as many unscrupulous breeders here as there are elsewhere in the world :)
I've just had a quick look at breeder listings on a well known Australian dog forum and there are 41 breeders of Yorkshire Terriers, that doesn't seem like a lack of breeders to me.
Honestly, keeping off the topic of weight so I apologise, I'd be looking at another breeder.
Has the breeder said if the pups will be main or limit register?

I agree with this 100%. Having a breed that normally carries 1-3 pups, and sometimes having all males in the litter, the last thing that I am going to promise someone is the first show prospect bitch I have bred in the last couple of litters! And why would I?
I have to be honest though, when I get pestered about weight in my pups, I lose all interest, as it is usually someone wanting a runt! :-(
Must be getting too cynical with my toy breed!

4 months wait is
nothing!
yes, there are not lacking yorkie breeders in AU. but hardly any of them will sell you a female with main register. I brought a yorkie from this breeder many yrs ago and keep in touch with her for yrs as well, that's why she would let me have one this time. however, I have to enter a co-ownership with her so she has part of the breeding control, and I will not allow to sell any pups under main reg, only the one I keep can be main reg.
Getting a main registered yorkie is too hard here, so Im very serious about this pup and worry she may not be big enough.....

I don't know if the breed standard is different in your country, but in the UK our standard is up to 7lbs for a Yorkshire terrier (I like a brood bitch to weigh OVER 5 lbs preferably nearer 6lbs and mated to a smaller male.)
Given the puppy weights that you have stated, and given that the pup is 1kg at the present time, I would expect her to make 5-6lbs as an adult.
I often have bitches that are still only 500gm at 12 weeks, and they make around 4lbs as adults. (Although I am perfectly aware that nothing is carved in stone.) Says she, whose favourite boy grew into a Shetland pony! He's still here though, saddle 'n' all! :-)
The standard here is the same. However, yorkie is not a common breed in AU, people breed this little dog are mainly for show purpose, so the average size tend to be smaller than the UK.
I got my first yorkie in the UK when I spent time study there. She is 5.8lbs and she is kind small size compare other yorkies in the UK.
from her current weight, I would say she will be around 5lbs, but what concerns me the most is her weight gain in the past 4weeks (from 7weeks old - 9weeks), she only gained 100g = 3.5oz, that really sound quite right for me!!!!
somehow
I have the feeling that she is these one stop growing at very young age, and therefore turn out too small to breed.
the breeder told me the puppy is a full thumbs width between the pelvic bones at the back, so that's a good sign. Not sure what that indicates, but she is kind encourage me to buy the puppy......!!!!
We have an old male Yorkie who was tiny as a puppy, in fact we did not think he would grow enough to show, and we felt he was so small even to sell was unfair and we kept him. Well he grew HUGE, in fact too big to show in the UK, though we did but he looked almost like an Australian Silky next to other UK yorkies so we only took him out a few times. Thankfully he is still hale and hearty at 17 yrs old.
On the other hand it sounds like the breeder is pressurising you in to buying. Don't feel like you HAVE to buy from her.

If your talking about the dogs seen in the street then you would be right as the majority of Yorkies are not bred with any standard in mind being a very popular puppy farmers/BYB breed, (you will often find them teh size of a Cairn or long like a dachs) but Jeansw info was regarding breed standard bred dogs.
