my girl was at the vets a few weeks ago with infected anal glands , it was cleared up with antibiotics and expresstion of her glands , she is 6 yrs old never had this problem before , now it looks like the infection is back again and i will be taking her back to the vets, i was wondering if there is anything i can add to her food [ fish 4 dogs ] to help her empty her glands when she goes to the toilet ,

You don't say what her stools are like, they need to be firm to naturally evacuate the anal glands, adding fibre will firm them up if not already so.
Any area of infection left behind after A/B's are finished will soon flare up again.
her stools are a little loose but not runny, it was only a 5 day course i was given by the vet and it did clear up, i seem to remember reading something about porridge on here, but now i can't find the thread, thanks
My girl had problems with Anal glands a few years ago, kept having to take her to the vets for them to be emptied, and at one point she had to have a course of antibiotics.
I spoke to a someone who had had similar size gundogs for years, shows them, judges also a qualified trainer. She told me to look at her diet and not to keep getting them emptied, in her view once you start emptying them manually the glands stop working naturaly and you always have to empty them.
She said far better to give them a diet that gives them a really hard pooh as this passes, the gland will empty itself.
I changed to Royal Canin maxi sensible, chicken wings a couple of times a week, and a good hard knuckle bone approx once a week. Never looked back, she has never had to go to the vets since.
I know this has not worked for all dogs and some have had more serious problems, but I would at first make sure you look a diet, not a very nice subject but you need the dog to pass some hard poohs.
I would keep the diet simple, and not give any leftovers, titbits etc untill you get regular hard motions and then see how things are then, before reintroducing any other food.
Good luck let us know how you get on.

I give steamed pumpkin[apparently butternut squash works the same but not tried it] to firm up soft stools, I buy a pumpkin in season, steam it and put in ice cube trays, when frozen put the cubes in a bag and store in freezer, easy to give a frozen cube when required, you can then judge how many times a week you will need to give it depending on the consistancy of her stools.
As already mentioned adding raw bone can help matters too.
thank you for your responses , i will keep her diet to her kibble only but will see if i can find butternut squash, i use to give her bones but they constipated her she would run around the garden crying because her poo came out like concrete bullets
Is she a small breed ? If so I would start with a half a chicken wing at a time and see how it goes. I buy mine fresh then freeze them solid for a couple of days (kills any nasties) and then defrost and feed to them. They do have quite hard poohs the day after.
You need to have poohs that are firm enough to empty the Anal Glands without causing too much discomfort to her.
