Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Breeding bitch to Great Great Grandfather??

I was just googling and saw dogs for sale on 'preloved'. Couldn't believe it, so went on and looked. There is a litter on there, pups, £750 and the mating is bitch to her great great grandfather, surely that's not good??

The only problem I can see is that there can only be a very short time between each generation, unless the sire is pretty ancient. There's no problem in the relationship between sire and dam - it's so distant as to be negligible.

Ah, pleased about that! He is a 2004 whelp, so 7 years old, guess some of those must have been bred from quite young then.

Very - in my breed a bitch shouldn't have a litter before 2 years old.

Ah yes, but could be dogs being mated rather than bitches having pups if you see what I mean. But still quite young to have dogs at stud.

I would wonder at the reasons for the mating - accidental? Convenient? If they are on Preloved it's unlikely it's because they were trying to bring out a certain feature in the line which might have been lost in the intermediate generations.... well, if so that's likely to be colour [blue perhaps? lol] or a 'certain' temperament :( Maybe I am wrong and the GGSsire is a show dog, as is the bitch, and it's a studied mating with all other considerations being met...

Well done MsT, round one goes to you.....lol yes they are blues.

There were also 'Bellington' terriers x staff also blue hehe

Mmmm interesting! - as far as I know Bedlingtons aren't genetically blue dilute, but are born black with a certain gene that pales the black to 'blue' over time (as in Kerry Blues, and poodles, and others). Would be interesting to ask the seller what colour they were when born. I'll need to check, but I think this gene is dominant to non-paling, hence the reason they might have got some "blues", but asking what colour they were at birth would sort it.

Oh MsTemeraire, you have such faith in people :(

Moreso than I do I'm afraid... :(

Well now I've actually seen the advert (I requested the info from Jo, purely for my own satisfaction) - I pretty much had my suspicions confirmed.

Such absolute pants that makes my blood boil.....
I could say that my two Staffords have 25 Champions in their pedigree too - whoop de do, doesn't make them worthy of producing progeny themselves....
Grr

Rant rant rant

Where's that 'like' button Tessies Tracey? My 18 month girl's sire is the 2nd highest winner in our breed, and her mum was a perfectly decent quality bitch - but I don't think many show people looking at her would think she should be bred from! :-p
