Topic Dog Boards / Health / is vic safe ?

hi all i have been suffering from a bad cold and decided to apply some vic rub. i accidently dropped the tub on the floor and it broke. while i was wiping it away with a cloth one of my puppies decided it would be great fun to snatch the cloth away from me and run off with it. he didn't run very far as he soon dropped it guess the smell and taste was to yukk. the others decided to pick it up and did the same thing "dropped it almost as quick as they snatched it". I wonder if this would be safe to lightly smear on the wooden step i have as the pups have been taking an intrest in it as a teething place ? i have tried allsorts of none chewing sprays from the shops and they seem to love the taste of em all PLUS vic is much cheaper to buy what do you think ?

I have used Vicks with no ill effects in a similar way, I feel as long as they don't ingest too much it is fine, and the taste usually puts them off well. I used it on the corner of our wooden video cabinet and it worked a treat.

It does have a few essential oils in such as eucalyptus and these should never be taken orally except under supervision, so just ensure that the dog doesn't develop a fetish for the product :D

We are giving our guinea pig Vicks inhalations at the moment as she has a respiratory problem and it really helps.

If they hate the taste of it, they probably won't ingest enough for it to do any harm! Have you tried bitter apple? My dog absolutely HATES it, and it's quite cheap.

I'd just been talking to a friend about Coronation St - saw the title of this thread and immediately thought it was someone asking about Dev's cousin !! :D :D

(Sorry :) )

thanks to everyone for the replies regarding the vic. as the pups seem to hate the smell i hope they won't aquire a taste for it and as from today i decided to use it on the step and there has been no attempts to chew it from either of them. fingers crossed they will leave it alone from now on. i did try the bitter apple but they really liked the taste and would sit there waiting for me to apply it so they could lick it all off, typical pups i guess :-) i will keep a close eye on them with it and will keep you all up to date with the progress.
thanks again
