Topic Other Boards / Foo / How can someone just leave a dead cat there
- By Susiebell [gb] Date 25.01.12 14:06 UTC
My beautiful cat hadn't come home since Monday evening and it was totally out of character so today the dog and I went out and put up posters for her.  Whilst doing this I found her body in a small car park behind some flats.  She had been there for 1-2 days having been hit by a car.  The impact and her injuries meant that she probably died instantly.

She had her collar on and is microchipped.  her collar has a huge I AM LOVED, PLEASE SCAN ME on it.  As well as our numbers and address being on her collar.  She was by the entrance to the flats so many people must have walked past her but no-one bothered to call us.

I am obviously devastated as she was my baby - she was dumped in a cardboard box at 5 months old and we've had her ever since (she was only 3) but the middle of her life was very happy - she loved the dog and would come for walks with her in the park, following us all the way or I'd hear her bell and know she was around.  She met us at our car everyday and walked us to the door and she loved having her belly rubbed.  She had never once bitten or scratched and was so patient even with Andy's toddler nephew playing with her.

She really was unlike any other cat I've had - we always said she thought she was a dog.  So she started her life in a box and ended it left in the rain at the side of a road for 2 days.  The poor girl was worth so much more than that.

How can anyone just drive off after doing that?  How can people walk past and not call us?  I wouldn't have blamed the driver as these things happen but now I do blame them for leaving her there and letting me find her in that way with her body soaked through.

I am so sorry for your loss. what a horrible thing to happen.  perhaps whoever hit your cat didnt realise, I cant undersand people walking past her and not looking at her collar. sad world we live in.
- By Susiebell [gb] Date 25.01.12 14:35 UTC
I'm devastated that she's gone as she really was one in a million (I know everyone says that but she truly was so different to any other cat I've had/ known).

I'm just so gobsmacked that so many people will have walked past her and just ignored her.  It is a very sad world we live in.  I know to many people she would be just an animal but she was my baby.

My dog Bailey is very quiet, she sniffed her body and whimpered a bit so not sure what she thinks of her best friend.

Just had to come on here to remind myself not all people are heartless and some people do understand xx

I'm so sorry to hear this - how upsetting.   I think sometimes people who don't have animals just don't understand - in particular people who don't have them think cats are totally independent and only interested in food - and so don't understand how close the bond can be.  Also I think probably someone just thought someone else had done it . . . I would have expected the person who hit her to have done it.  The final excuse I can think of is that many people just aren't very good at facing things & they probably just averted their gaze & walked on by.

At least you can comfort yourself that she had a lovely life with you and was killed instantly.   I read a fantastic prayer from a rescue dog to its grieving owners, thanking them for all their love.  And leaving them with one wish - that they give a lovely home to another stray.  I hope you find another special cat.

I'm so sorry you had to find your girl like this, heartbreaking.  Please find some comfort in the fact that you got to bring her home. ((hugs))

Sorry to hear that news - I had something similar many years ago.  My old cat had dementia and I put her out one evening - she never came back in.  I searched around for her and asked people.  The guy who kept a few sheep on the fields around me told me that he had found her body in his yard - he said the fox had taken her head off and he had thrown her body down into the woods below - 'you didn't want it did you?' he said!  This was several days after she had gone missing and he lived 100 yards away and had said nothing.  I blamed myself for putting her outside - but I had really not thought that she was in any danger.
I have been in the other position of having a cat run out into the road under my car.  I had my granddaughter with me and we parked up and searched around everywhere.  Then I found someone else looking.  The cat was already injured and had escaped as they took it into the vets. It was still able to run and climb.  Don't know if anyone ever found it.

We found a dead cat on the side of the road, and you'd be surprised how hard it is to find someone to deal with it.

It wouldn't occur to most people that a cat might be chipped and how to find out if it is, most would not want to be picking up a dead animal to find a scanner.

We rang several different people, after knocking on the doors of half the street, and in the end the council said they would send out someone in road cleaning to dispose of it, as I suppose it is classed as rubbish.
- By Susiebell [gb] Date 25.01.12 17:45 UTC
Yeah I know its difficult for some people.  I guess i just surround myself with animal lovers so forget that some people wouldn't see a companion and family member laying there they'd just see road kill.

Also I know I have found a cat before with no collar, no microchip (I took the body to a vets and they were kind enough to scan it for free).  It wasn't suitable to take a photo so they advised me to make a poster with the details of the cat and put it up in the area with their phone number on and they would take the calls etc.  I don't know if anyone was ever reunited with their cat but I did what I could.

I also know from experience it is not nice to knock on someones door to tell them you've found their cat.  A neighbour at my old house worked for cat protection and over the space of 10 years I found at least 5 of her cats (the road was really too busy to keep non-street wise cats on).

Thank you for your kind words and I know that there are many people out there like us who would do the best for anyones animal xx

I am so sorry what a horrible way to find her :-( x
- By lolly [gb] Date 25.01.12 19:06 UTC
I too am really sorry to hear this-cats are as much as a part of the family as dogs.I think there should be some sort of law that people have to report a dead animal and if it is a cat or dog take it to the nearest vets(without charge)for the animal to be scanned and the owner informed. In the last three years i have had to put two of my cats to sleep and my dog and i know how heartbreaking it is to lose special members of your family, but it must have been especially hard for you to lose your cat in those circumstances.-my heart goes out to you.

- By diddles [gb] Date 25.01.12 19:18 UTC
We too lost our cat 2 weeks ago, only he was knocked over in front of our house and the driver never stopped and left our poor smiffy dying, truly broke my hear that he was taken at such a young age.
What i cannot understand is why no one stopped as he was obviously a pet from the local area, we are a very small village.
Just cowards.
I feel you pain because ours too was 1 in a million, he would sit on the back of the sofa on an evening grooming your hair, licking it until it was wet.
it frightened me into not letting my other 2 out but they climbed the walls in 2 days and trying every door and nearly ripped the cat flap off trying to open it.
so i have had to relent and open the flap now, i have become paranoid and am out calling them all the time to make sure they are around.
RIP little soul.

So awful for you I tOo don't understand how people walk past having on too many times stopped and dealt with such things. On one occasion I was bitten by an injured cat I rescued after being hit by a car and landed myself in hospital. RIP little one x and also smiffy x

So sorry for your loss and what you have had to go through. It will be hard to get the awful memories out of your mind, but try and think of the good life you gave her. (((Hugs)))
- By penfold [gb] Date 26.01.12 09:42 UTC
So sorry Susiebell....your poor little cat.  Take some solace in that it was quick and you did find her in the end, you'll never be left just 'not knowing'.

It is a poor reflecction though that no one thought to even just to give you a call to advise you she was there.....theyy didn't even have to deal with her - just give you call :-(

We have a colony of feral cats living round her (rural fields) and I quite often find them by the roadside - don't know how anyone could run over an animal and simply leave it.  I've taken to carrying a few old blankets in the boot of my car and will take the  cats to my vets so they can scan for a chip, just in case.  I lost my little female tortie a couple of years ago, a few months after we moved house.  Never found her body - again she was chipped and had a collar but nothing.  We asked round our near neighbours and the local farmers kept an eye out but nothing.  I just wanted to know what had happened.
- By Sawheaties [gb] Date 26.01.12 09:52 UTC
So sorry for both the posters who have lost beloved cats. Last week someone hit a cat outside our house, I knew it had happened in the previous five minutes as I had been loading the car, when I went back there she was lying next to my car. I think looking at her it was instant, she was a beautiful cat, having lived here for a long time I thought I recognised her, went to where I thought she belonged and realised that the smaller version of the cat was there so not the one.

I took her to the vet, they scanned her and she was chipped so they informed the owner, left my details so the owner could get in touch in case she wanted to but they didn't. We own a cat and I would want to know what had happened to her. I'm afraid that because we are animal lovers we expect others to be and to respect life but sadly that is no longer the case.

RIP little ones.

So sorry to hear about the loss of your beloved cat.

As someone who has owned 3 cats, two being hit by cars, I can safely say I know how upsetting something like this is. In the defence of someone driving a car which hits a cat, I don't think you would necessarily know it had happened.

I remember once, years ago, I was in a car being driven by a friend, and a cat ran out in front of the car, which we then ran over. It was shocking - we were only teenagers at the time, but we scooped the cat up, and began knocking on doors until we found out who the owner was. Obviously they were distraught, but at the time it was the best we could do. Will never forget it, it was awful!

We had two brothers as kittens, who came from a farm (took the 2 we could catch in the barn!). At around a year old, one was hit by a car, and he managed to jump into our bedroom (GFF). He had a back leg pinned & lived to around 17. We then moved to a rural location, and within 2 weeks was knocked over and killed instantly right outside our house. He had been sitting on the back of the sofa behind me right before this, and I was upset for ages - he was the fluffier and cuddlier of the two, and also the one who would take on the toms in the area, protecting his brother. They were called Bill & Ben. We now have one female tabby, Freddie, who is around 19 yrs. She came as a kitten from the RSPCA, hardly goes out & can't be long for this world.

Cars and cats definitely don't mix!

So sorry for your loss once again, my thoughts are with you.

How awful, I cannot imagine finding my own cat like that and how no-one wrapped her up and took her to a vet to be scanned!

I have unfortunately hit a cat which died many years ago and wrapped the poor thing in a blanket and drove straight to the vets.  They then scanned and made notes on the system incase anyone phoned looking for their cat because there was no microchip.  If I came across anyone's cat I would always get them to a vet for scanning so an owner can be found.

We have a lot of cats but only one (because I didn't know any different) is allowed outside - we also live in a very quiet cul de sac and he seems to just go in the garden luckily.  However all of the others are indoor cats only, they are Devon Rex so shouldn't be out running free anyway.  I can't bear the thought of them on any roads.

Such a sad thing to happen but at least you can let her rest in peace now.

Awwww im so sorry!! :(

Last Monday i was driving down a road at 20mph (speed bump road) and all of a sudden there was a huge bang! I stopped my car thinking maybe my exhaust had fallen off or something, then an elderly couple said 'oh it must be ok, it ran off' i thought what on earth!! Turned out a cat had run at the side of my car and i couldnt see it. I looked up and down the road but couldnt see anything......im devestated to think someones cat has gone home to die and it may have been my fault, makes me feel sick thinking about it. It was such a loud bang i cant see how it could have survived :( :(

I dont understand how anyone could just leave a dead/injured cat if they knowingly hit it!?
- By ginjaninja [gb] Date 26.01.12 13:34 UTC
When I was growing up we had several cats killed on roads - no one stopped.  However we also had 2 cats get hit & survive.  One came wobbling up the drive with his side all wet and his claws worn down.  He was fine.  The other cat apparently ran in the side of a car (according to the kind lady who stopped) and was out cold in the middle of the road.  We really thought she was dead - but she came round in the car on the way to the vets.  She also turned out to be fine after a full.  So it is possible that you didn't kill or even injure it - I just wanted to give you a bit of hope as it's horrid to think you might have hurt something.
- By claire_41 [gb] Date 26.01.12 14:23 UTC
So sorry to hear this, may she be free to chase mice at the bridge xx

For what its worth, on at least 3 occasions i have seen a car in front hit a cat, each time they have carried on going but i have stopped and picked it up and taken it to the vets.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 26.01.12 16:59 UTC

> I dont understand how anyone could just leave a dead/injured cat if they knowingly hit it!?

trouble is with adrenaline often the cat will run quite some way.

I saw a car hit a cat and I and the driver ran off after it but lost track of it.

With the OP's cat the drive may not have known they hit the cat or she may have been hit some way from where she died.  Passersby may all have assumed someone else had informed the LA to take care of the body, as they deal with 'road kill'.

Sadly if we allow our cats freedom then we are playing Russian roulette with their lives, and they take their chances like the wildlife.

I am so sorry you lost your cat.
It is awful that some people are so hard hearted & don't want to help in anyway.

Last week i found a dead cat placed on our front driveway. Sadly he had been hit by a vehicle.  He didn't have a collar on & people along this stretch of road don't have cats because of the busy road.  A good friend helped me take him to the vets but he wasn't chipped so we still don't know who the owner is.
It was so upsetting to think that someone was missing their cat & we couldn't let them know.

I guess only animal lovers understand what a beloved pet means to its owners.  I'm so sorry for your loss.  Please take some comfort in the fact that although it was too short, she had a very happy life while she was with you.
- By Ghost [gb] Date 28.01.12 22:43 UTC
I'm so sorry to hear this news.

Its terrible you found her in this way - but you must comfort yourself in the knowledge that what happened to her after her death does not matter to her - all that matered to her was the wonderful life you gave her. As awful as it seems that she was eft this way - she knew nothing about it,she will find her way to the bridge and wait for you  x  x  x
- By LucyDogs [gb] Date 31.01.12 15:21 UTC
I posted on here last year because I'd found a dead cat in the woods. Flea collar with bell but no tag, looked fairly young but no obvious signs of injury. In the end I had to walk home with my dogs, come back out with a bag to pop her into, and take her to the vets. Luckily she was scanned so they could inform the owners. I can't imagine the pain of losing a pet and never knowing what had become of them, not to mention that route being a popular route for kids to go along to school, and I don't think they'd want to find a dead cat in the path either!
