- By Annabella [gb] Date 23.01.12 21:07 UTC
Brought my rescue lab home yesterday,as soon as my cat saw him she was terrified and ran out of the house,he has been brought up with labs and sleeps with my other lab,so I didnt think there would beH a problem, poor boy is sat in the shed at the moment and is to scared to come in,we have a cat flap and I have have a baby gate across the hall,I have got Ella my recue lab upstairs with me so fingers crossed he will come in when all is quiet,Ella is only 6 months old and is on the go all of the time poor girl has been given up by previous owners as they had no time for her so she had been left on her own for many hours, praying that Tom my catwill get used to her,

One of my cats never would venture back in the house so I ended up buying an outdoor cat kennel for her, lived until 18yrs outside, she just wouldn't tolerate the dogs at all, I used to carry her in in the winter and try to make her stay indoors but nope she would cry until I let her back out, (my other cats looking at her like she was mad) loved her kennel but hated the dogs. :-D Sometimes it just goes that way.

However, I doubt very much the same will be of your cat as she was happy before with your other dogs, it's just the newbie which has her on red alert and a bouncy 6 month pup who can blame her at the moment, :-) no doubt when hungry enough she will come in, just give it a little time and let her get used to her being part of the family group too. Just make sure pup does not chase her if you can.

Oh Sheila glad it has all worked out and you have picked your little girl up :-)

I wouldn't worry the tummies always win over and he will be back in soon :-)

Pokes our eldest kitten ( 4 years old) decided to pack her bags when Dave the kitten arrived but she soon reappeared after a couple of days and soon got used to ruling the house again after she realised he was a bit of a wimp and mummies boy and wasn't a threat :-D

Personally I would shut the dog away for a while (half an hour or so maybe) each day and bring the cat inside and make a lot of fuss of him.  Maybe if you could get him to relax indoors for a short while knowing that the new dog is safely out of the way he will gradually gain confidence to come in.

Having said all that, I have spent the last 18 months trying to befriend a feral cat who comes into my house regularly for food but I have been unable to stop my little dog from chasing her away if he sees her before I do, which is definitely not helping.

My cat won't come in the house since we lost our dog in December ( they were he best of freinds) she won't even come in for food so I've set a den up for her in the shed (it has a cat flap) and she seems very happy there! Hopefully your cat will come round soon!
