Topic Dog Boards / General / In season bitches and exercise

I have a young bitch who is season(her first one).

She is currently on day 8 and so far i've not walked her at all and feeling that maybe I should? I don't know what everyone's thoughts are on this?

I was thinking at this time that maybe some on lead road walking late at night and drive to said destination.

My male is not pining for her and has seen her through fencing and baby gates and has had a sniff and then walked off.
She is still dripping blood and just wondered is it seen as ok to walk her as above mentioned? She has supervised play and run about sessions in the garden and also we do training in the house, but feel now with a week of not walking she really does need to go out.

I also worry about infection too, with taking her out, is it something I should be worried about?

My other thought is speaking to my Dad and seeing if I can walk on his land with her on a lead and making sure their males are shut away, but its an area which is very popular with rabbits and foxes, hence my worry re infection. Also cattle and horses are kept on the land.

Any thoughts on the above..?

I can't really tell you anything about the technicalities of this......but when my setter bitch was in season I walked her, on lead of course and just kept my eye out for any other dogs approaching. I was always prepared to pick her up and carry her if I needed to, whilst passing any interested dogs, but that never even happened.

Haha, I can just envisage myself picking up my Rottie girl..

Right in that case i'll hold back on the wine for a few more hours and walk her shortly in the nearby village streets.

And if you don't mind looking silly, the knicker trick can stall a stray dog ;)

I think you'd be fine on your dads land with the other males shut securely away. My worry wouldnt be about the wild animals or livestock, it would be that great big hill that nearly did us all in!

I have all my bitched neutered now. however when entire i never had a problem when excersising them, i am a lone/rural walker so our walks were just as normal. plus i know my bitches and they never ever wander too far from me....even in season, and always come back. so our walks were just fine.

Here where I live, no latchkey dogs (efficient dog warden, pricey to get your dog back) I road walk mine as normal, on the basis that any dogs met should be under control on lead, so easy to avoid any issue, cross over the other side of the road etc.

I have also found it best not to walk the other girls where there are off lead dogs as they will have the scent of the in season bitch on them.

In 20 years of entire bitch ownership I have never had a follower or any dog camped outside the house.

Out of consideration for other owners I would never walk them where others may have their dogs off lead as after all I know my girl is in season the dogs owners won't and it is not fair as the dogs are likely to be distracted and disobey their owners and possibly get into a fight or get away from owners into trouble roads or livestock) due to following my girl.

Also I would never trust and in season bitch off lead, the instinct to go forth and multiply can be just as strong in bitches. I had my BSD bitch slip out the front door while in season many moons ago on the crucial day, and had to have a mis mate jab.

Because we don't live in an area where dogs are always with an owner and on lead (Lucky Brainless, I'm very envious lol)
We get up very, very early and drive to a local field so as not to leave a smelly trail to and from our door!!!
We avoid parks out of courtesy for those nice owners that I know use them with their dogs and I wouldn't walk her through shopping areas etc.
When she is finished we can resume normal walking and bike exercise.

Yes amazing how having to pay £50 a to the council dog warden service per day works to stop people allowing their dogs to go walk about.
