Hello all,
We have a 15 week pup, and as I was taking a soft toy from him, it chipped one of his small front teeth.
It didn't bother him and I didn't realise it happened, it was my wife that noticed it on the floor.
Is this an issue, does he need to see the vet, will it cause him problems?
Thanks

Not a problem it will be replaced by the adult tooth soon and unless the dog is in pain no real need to see a vet.

Thanks for the reply Nova.
On closer inspection it looks like it may be 1 of his larger teeth and there is some blood.
Does that alter things?
I'm very sad/worried.

Don't worry keep an eye on it and if the pup starts to look like it is uncomfortable then pop to the vet.
It won't be long before it will come out and be replaced by the adult tooth :-)

I really doubt it is an adult tooth are there any gaps between the teeth? If you really think it is an adult tooth then it will need to be seen by a vet, but at under 4 months I would not expect it to be.

There are gaps between all of his teeth, and they certainly look very much like they are baby teeth as they are all tiny, especially the smaller ones.
Are you sure it isn't one of his baby teeth that has come out?
They can be tiny without much root and can look like they have broken off.

Bez, to be honest I would stop worrying I am 99% sure that it is not a problem.

I agree at this age it will be very very likely to be a baby tooth coming out. This is typical of how they come out, while chewing or playing with a toy. Sometimes they look like a bit of tooth and not a whole tooth. It is also typical for there to be some blood when a baby tooth comes out.

Thank you all, I am concerned that not all of the tooth has come out, it has chipped/snapped so the root is still there and then it could lead to infection.
Like you all say, hopefully it is a baby tooth and his adult one will replace it soon.

It really should not be a problem it will not be there long enough to cause any trouble, the milk teeth are only 'just' attached so the roots do not go deep into the jaw. Forget it unless he is obviously worried by it, nothing will cause any long term problem and as there is not really any root there is unlikely to be any pain.

Here is a pic of a dogs baby
tooth .
You can see there isn't really what you would call a 'root' on it.
As others have said, they can bleed when they come out.

I find their breath smells metallic when teething due to the iron in the blood.
Use 3 old tea towels as teething aids, roll them up length ways and knot 2 or 3 times, run under the tap, wring out, put in the freezer till frozen and give the pup one at a time till it is no longer frozen, swap it with one in the freezer, you can do the same with doggie ropes.

I did this for Buster when he was a pup to help get the loose teeth out. I also gave him frozen baby carrots the chew when he had bleeding gaps from lost teeth, they seemed to work well.
