Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Advice needed, sending semen abroad.

Last year I posted on here that I had been asked to send frozen semen to Finland.

I will be taking Stan to the vet repro clinic in Cambridge next week.

The bitch's owner is paying all the costs direct to the clinic but my problem is over the stud fee I'm charging. When my boy has been used in  the UK I don't ask for the fee to be paid until the litter has been born, there are at least 2 puppies and they live for a week. As we are such a small breed I know the two people who have used him on their girls and class them as friends.

I don't have this relationship with the person in Finland, but she is someone recommended through a friend and her dogs are kept as family pets like mine.

What I want to get peoples opinion on is "should I ask for my stud fee at time of collection and if the AI works all well and good or use the same agreement I have in the UK?"

Part of me thinks it's costing her such a lot to get the semen sent over that I feel greedy asking for my stud fee up front if she gets no puppies but on the other hand I have made her aware of the cost from her first enquiry and she has chosen to go ahead with this

Your views please

I have always paid at the time of mating, usually £200-350 depending on whether the stud was a champ, proven or unproven,on the understanding that a repeat visit would be available if she missed, I have never heard of anyone being willing to wait till the pups have arrived.

Dealing long distance I would expect to be paid up front, I would use a paypal account as security rather than giving your bank details out. Out of curiosity do you send enough for repeat matings at 48 hr intervals?

Hope it results in a successful litter.

The above (stud fee on live litter) is the norm in my breed where most stud dogs will have only occasional use and the usual price of a puppy is the stud fee.

I've heard of something similar; sometimes in my breed they charge for each puppy born, so I've heard. I paid £500 and travelled 5 hours each way to use a Champion here in the UK, paid upfront. If it hadn't have worked I think they would have given me a free go next time, from what I've been told that's the norm.

Sharon, in your situation I would ask for it to be paid upfront, as she has been told already the costs.
There have been alot of arguments in my breed about stud fees, it has been stated that the price of stud in the UK is the price of a pup, this was by a self imposed spokesperson for the breed, she wasn't speaking for me!
I have been asked for my boy to be used in France, I suppose I am unusual in that I am happy to travel to them rather than the other way around, as it is just so much easier, but....we discussed everything, and I am happy for them to only pay my expenses, no actual stud fee.
AI is very expensive, and I think the cost of registering a litter in  Finland is alot more than here, but if she has entered into an agreement with you, then you should not feel bad about the fee payment.
Do you have a contract already made, what happens if the mating (AI) fails?

I agree.

I have a breed where £250 is about the average stud fee.  Unlike the large breed owners, where there are far more puppies, so the stud fee is the price of a pup.

In a breed like mine, where 1-3 pups is the norm, it would be a bit much to charge much more.  I did have someone use one of my dogs, bitch was definitely pregnant.  So my boy had done his job.  I had charged £200.  But the bitch had one dead puppy.  Knowing how gutted I would have been, I offered a free return.

And I have let someone use my boy FOC.  My choice, and to help someone get started.  So it's a subject that doesn't have a 'one size fits all' answer.
