Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Accidental mating
- By marisa [gb] Date 20.01.12 13:08 UTC
My friend had an accidental mating with her bitch last night. They both tied and, when the dog withdrew, there was quite a lot of fluid came out. When she rang the vet this morning to ask about the misallaince/mismate jab, they said to bring her in in 10 days time. Has anyone heard of this? I have heard about having the jab (followed by a second one) straight away, or on days 3 and 5 but not 10 days later. Many thanks.

Gosh that does seem a long time to wait, think how far the pups will be forming too.

Alizin can be given up to 45 days later but it is most effective if given within the first 3 weeks -and kindest -no pups to abort. Personally I see no reason to wait and the data sheet says nothing about waiting.

When I had a bitch break a door to get to her own son a couple of years ago, it happened on a Friday evening. We took her for the injection Monday and Wednesday -simply to not have to go on a weekend.

Make sure it IS Alizin and nothing else though -it is far safer than the old style injection.

Alizin is best given at the end of the season, not during it (some people have been known to allow their bitch to mate again afterwards if it's given straight away, and pups have resulted). It can be given (in two injections 24 hours apart) up to 45 days after mating, but before implantation (at 21 days) is less traumatic.

The datasheet says "To reduce the possibility of lack of expected efficacy, avoid the use of Alizin until after the end of oestrus and avoid new mating before the end of oestrus."

She has now been told by the vet to leave it until the end of the season and that it wouldn't make any difference if they mated again between now and then, which is not which the Alizin datsheet said, so I will let her know.

It may not make a difference to the injection, but it certainly will could make a very dangerous difference to the dog and bitch if left to just get on with it :(  I'd not only continue to keep them separated, but see if she's got someone who could take the dog for a few more days.  If they mate unsupervised and she decides to turn on him, or pulls away before it's time he could end up with some very serious injuries.

I had this happen with one of my bitches.  It was to my Yorkie stud boy, and they were not related.  But I wanted the bitch spayed, as she had had an operation for patella problems, so not suitable for breeding.

She had the Alizin jab within 24 hours, followed by a second.  I made 150% sure that she would not be able to get near a male again.

It was a total success.  She is now spayed.  But I couldn't have left a bitch to wait for the jab.  I couldn't face aborting puppies when they were formed.

I would definitely recommend, and sooner rather than later.  I have no regrets.  I made the right decision.

The datasheet says "To reduce the possibility of lack of expected efficacy, avoid the use of Alizin until after the end of oestrus and avoid new mating before the end of oestrus."

Which makes you wonder if they only say that because they expect silly bitch owners to allow the bitch to get mated again during the same season.....and that could make it look like their product did not work. I see nowhere where it says that it is the product that won't work as well if given during the season. I have certainly heard of people being told to wait until the end of the season as then there is no need to keep the bitch away from dogs.

Exactly!  But responsible dog owners make sure it won't happen.  I was hesitant, never having used it before.  On the 2nd jab I had chance to discuss it with a young girl vet.  I wanted to be sure that I had made the right decision.  (I had heard that it's not always a success.)

She told me that she had never, ever known it to be problematic when carried out soon after the event. And she accepted that I was responsible.  :-)

Second-hand experience here but someone I knew had a male dog mate an unrelated bitch, his half-sister and his mother with the space of a few months. The first litter was allowed to go ahead but the others were given Alizin as soon as possible.

I can see the sense on giving it later after the season had finished, which in most cases would e within 10 days of mating, as that way it will be given after all potential matings.

It was the old delvesteron and other drugs that had to be given right away

I know someone who had the Alizin jab(s) immediately after the bitch was mated and she went on to have a single pup born by caesarian which failed to thrive and, after a week of being hand fed every two hours because the bitch rejected the pup, had to be put down. Heartbreaking situation.

So it seems that waiting a week or two is the best option. Thanks, have filed that away for future reference, very handy to know. I guess the human instinct is to think 'right away' i.e. as you would with the morning-after pill!

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that having the jab straight away caused it to partially fail, just to say that (like most things) it's not infallible and doesn't pretend to be but it's better than the alternative.
