Over the past couple of months my garden and paddock has become over run with massive mole hills. Is there anything that can be done to stop them? (without harming the moles). I would just like a nice flat garden!

If there is, please let me know :) We have tried traps and smokes - they didn't work. Someone has told us of something called Defender which is some sort of oil (I think, can't remember) which gets into the soil and is eaten by the worms which the moles then don't want to eat, so go away - that's the theory, but we haven't tried it yet :) :) We have a large amount of grass so everything is expensive to try. Fortunately we have yet to do a makeover on the garden, so we don't mind the molehills and collapsed tunnels - yet :) :)

We've had loads of molehills recently. Our place will never be Kew Gardens so I leave them but the soil makes good potting compost, nicely tilled.  My FIL tried everything to get rid of them, nothing worked, he even tried the little musical gadgets inside greeting cards which are supposed to be a deterrent!

I have a dog who would like to help. She loves digging in fresh mole hills. I suspect though you might not want the hills replacing with huge craters?

lol-no that wouldn't be ideal either!

I did suspect there wouldn't be an easy solution, guess i will just use the soil for my plant pots then, at least its not wasted :)

My Mums moles disappeared when she started using "Cluck""chicken manure on the garden, before that umpteen mounds per day would appear, her dachsie would sit looking at them but never caught a mole.

We got a mole catcher who did the trick, all for the price of me grooming his dog :-)

my moles bogged off when I got chickens !, although I suspect they may have ended up as lunch for the girls, nothing a hen likes more than a bit of fresh meat.

Sticking a few windmills in the ground works!
Child size things that just cause vibrations to put them of coming your way :)

This thread is reminding me of a Jasper Carrott sketch...

We had a mole in the garden...I waited until I saw the run moving, put a spade either end & 2 forks in the middle..instant grave. Yes not nice but it worked, I wouldnt have liked to see it, to kill it though.

I was just thinking the same re jasper carrot

We had to resort to a mole catcher. Tried all sorts of mole friendly stuff, including the windmills and nothing worked. The lawn ended up more soil than grass. The cats caught one but only the one. So we had to do the deed and get a man in. He caught several and we have been mole free since....until a few days ago when I spotted one of the dreaded mounds again.

Think my dogs would have a great game with those!

Maybe we will need to get a mole catcher then.

Sounds like you need a guard hen!

Celii, I've seen one of my girls eat a mouse that was foolhardy enough to run across the pen, but it never occurred to me that moles would see them as a predator to avoid. Isn't nature wonderful.

Windmills, mothballs, motor mower.......tried them all and nothing worked.  The best result for us was when when we just left them alone and they eventually moved on!!  :)

Jay, I don't think the moles did avoid the hens, I think the hens ate them lol. Worst I saw with the hens was a poor wood pigeon fledgling, poor thing was still alive but in a dreadful state, I had to take it to the vets to be pts. They also go nuts if the dogs catch the odd rabbit that gets into the garden, they really are like degenerate dinosaurs then.
