I found this when searching- should she only be fed twice a day? She is 3 months.

2 months 2-4 cups per day - (divided into 3 meals daily)
3 months 3-5 cups per day - (divided into 2 meals daily)
4 months 4-6 cups per day - (divided into 2 meals daily)
5 months 5-7 cups per day - (divided into 2 meals daily
6 months 6-8 cups per day - (divided into 2 meals daily)
7 months..... 6-9 cups per day - (divided into 2 meals daily)
8 months..... 6-9 cups per day - (divided into 2 meals daily)
9 months..... 7-10 cups per day- (divided into 2 meals daily)
10 - 12 months....7-10 cups per day - (divided into 2 meals daily)

12 -18 months (males).... 8-14 cups a day (divided into 2 meals daily)
12 -18 month (females)... 6-9 cups a day (divided into w meals daily

No - two meals a day from 6 months at the earliest.

Pups need more, but smaller, meals than an adult dog. So it's 4 meals a day till 12 weeks, 3 meals a day till 6 months and two meals a day thereafter. (Although some need to be on three meals daily for longer.)

I don't know about Giant breeds but my collies don't even tend to want the 3 meals for as long as the first 6 months. Once they start leaving their lunch-time feed, I then give two meals per day.

My dalmatian pup is still wanting three meals (or four or five, if allowed!) at 9 months old.

:-)  I suspect if I asked them the collies would agree with that philosophy - they would probably want fed every hour on the hour :-)

I've always followed the same timeline as you, after 6 months they stay on 2 meals a day for life. I could get away with feeding the collies once a day but hounds always seem to get bile if they don't eat every 12 hours, not to mention the greater risk of bloat with a bigger meal so it's easier to just feed them all twice.

With a little light snack in between, just to keep the wolf from the door!

Yep that sort of thing, they eat like they don't know if they will ever be fed again!

My giant breed wanted 3 meals a day up to 7 months or so.  When she started to leave most of a meal uneaten, we dropped the 3rd meal.

Three small meals a day is fine at the moment , it is recommended in bloat guidelines  as well , so as not to overload the gut .She may naturally drop a meal herself ,,but then don't top up the other  two too much .

Buster had 3 meals per day up to about 12 months old, then dropped to 2 (and kept on 2).
He was on 4 meals per day up to about 5 or 6 monhts old.

I agree with 3 meals per day untill atleast 6 months old.

3 out of my 4 would agree with you - the 4th would rather just have snacks and training treats without any actual food....

Our Danes were still on 3 meals a day plus snacks until they were a year old, they went onto 2 meals after that plus snacks/treats, they still have 2 meals a day plus bones/treats and there both 5 now.

Sounds good..

I give her about a 1 cup at 4:30 am
1/2 cup at 12:00
1 cup at 4pm
1/2 cup at around 7

I did offer a cup but she seems to be fine on half- at those times. My son feeds her at 12 and he's back to school.
Plus she gets half a dog bone biscuit and some cani source in the morning as well.

Is this to much or not enough?

I usually leave the bowl down at 4pm and pick up at 7 pm and noticed that is all she eats-
The bowl only holds 2 cups and I always measure at 7pm just to see and she has only ate 1/2 a cup.
In total from 4-7pm  1 cup and a half- still have a cup when I pick it up.
She has her dish and the boston's seem to only share out of the one bowl which works fine with me.
The dish is down all day for my bostons but she is kenneled so I have control over how much she eats,
plus she is way to young to have run of the house right now.

It's very hard to say as individuals vary.  If your cups are about 3 1/2 oz by weight or 100g it sounds like she is getting 300g which is about 1/2 as much again as what one of my pups would be on to that age and would increase up to about 5 months.

If she grows onto more Dane size she mayl quickly need a lot more than that as she grows, but if she is going to be Amstaff Pitt size it may be she will not be much over the size of my breed.

I don't know much about giant breeds but the one thing I notice there is that they're not very evenly spaced. I think 7 1/2hrs between feed 1 -2 is a bit long and the next 2 meals are only 4 and 3 hours apart so she has hardly got time to get hungry again, then she has to go 9 1/2 hrs overnight. Can you not even them out a little? say-4:30am, 10am, 3pm, 8pm. Just a suggestion but she'll find it easier to eat to her full appetite with more even spacing.

Its kinda hard since I am at work- my son does give her a lil at around 8am, hubby comes in at 11 and my son at noon from school.
I put the food down at 4:30 and she is not kenneled again till 6:20am. The food stays down for my bostons since they are not
scehduled at all- those are the times she gets out of the kennel and is able to eat. The 8 one son only offers a lil and she is out for a bit
but he must get to school- noon she is out for a half. Then at 3pm she is out till bed time which is prob 11-12pm Hubby even brings
her when he picks me up from work- aaaw she is spoiled but learning manners fast lol

I put her out this morning, 15 min later she asked to go out and actually looked at me and waited lol think
she is def getting the idea of it- so proud 3 months- she's a smart lil cookie :-)

She seems to be taking more of the Dane- she has grown so much in these couple of weeks we have had her- she is now taller then
my Bostons lol

I agree with agilabs - I don't think your timings are ideal and would suggest you try and space her meals more evenly.  In particular, and I think I've mentioned on another of your threads, 7pm is too early for her last meal.  You're expecting her to last all night which isn't really fair.

You also said on other threads that she is loose - I'd say that's only to be expected in a pup but you are contributing to it by feeding some meals too close together...

Finally I'd recommend you accurately weigh her food.  Try weighing your cup measurements and you'll see that you can be adrift by up to 50g each time.  This won't help you to manage her meals and may also contribute to making her loose.

I prefer to feed equal amounts spread evenly throughout the day.  It really helps with managing the zoomies, allows you to schedule training times and snooze times, and also greatly assists with toilet training.  You and she soon learn that what goes in comes out, and how long it takes!!

I woudl feed at 8am, then lucnchtime 12 - 1pm, then 5pm and last thing at say 9 - 10pm.
- By dollface Date 12.01.12 11:10 UTC
Hubby did her last feeding at 9:30 I believe. I will try that Brainless and see if that helps with her loose stool.
This bag of dogfood is almost done- so gonna go grab some Wysong and mix the rest up tomorrow- I no that one def
agreed with her. I just think to that maybe duck & salmon maybe a lil to rich for her tummy.

I usually buy different food each time I run out to give variety- am I still able to do this with her being so lil?

We also started the treadmill yesterday- straight after work for about 2 min lol Pretty freezing and very windy out,
so would def like to get her use to that so we have something when it is very miserable out. My one Boston doesn't
mind it- the other hates it but will go on with a treat coaxed in front of her. K9 Natural Green tripe- they all love this.

Thank you

It's best to stick to the same food all the time, and if you do change it, make the change gradual over a period of about a week. For the first two days replace a quarter of the old food with the new food at each meal; for the next two days make it half-and-half, and for the next two or three days make it three-quarters new food and one quarter old food. This makes the transition much easier for them and avoids upset tummies.

I think I will do that- and stick with the Wysong for awhile- will be starting supper feeding with some added.

Thanks :-)
