Topic Dog Boards / Health / Deformed leg/tendon injury?
- By drover [gb] Date 07.01.12 19:47 UTC
Today I went and rescued a "20 month old border collie bitch" turns out she is more like a year old and bred from her first season :( she had a litter in september and is an absolute state, the place I got her from was a hell hole and she is literally skin and bone.

When I first got her home, she looked like she had a deformed leg, possibly an unrepaired fracture as it sort of moves too far out when she walks.
She has zero muscle tone so im wondering whether this could be the cause (kept in the cupboard under the stairs her whole life)

Anyway, I have now taken a picture from behind and her tendon looks way too far to the outside...obviously she will go to the vet on monday but any thoughts appreciated.

Just thought I would update this...it is in fact a leg that has been broken and not been set by a vet. Poor girly.

Have been following this elsewhere and she is indeed a little love :)

She will need some intensive surgery to that leg (operated, re-broken, re-set and pinned, then pins checked, possibly re-pinned, and eventually removed). An estimate of £1K for that is not excessive in my opinion, especially as it may be done via a consultant to ensure she has adequate mobility in later life -  she's barely more than a puppy herself, and deserves a long life on four good strong legs.

Also having seen her real weight vs ideal weight she is very thin, yet it was some time ago her pups went... I can't help wondering how thin she was after/during lactation. I also wonder when the leg injury occurred - an untreated break BEFORE being mated, or during? Or later? (Doesn't bear thinking about does it!)

If anyone is interested I will post the FB link to her vet fund appeal or you can PM me.

Drover - how about some links to pics?

Poor mite.  That is so sad.  Why the hell do some folk have dogs.

For money.

She was being sold on via free ads as a "bargain" and "due in season again soon"... despite weighing only 9kg and with an untreated broken limb.

OMG!

Am I reading right?  9kg for a BC?
- By MsTemeraire Date 11.01.12 00:21 UTC
Jean, you will need to ask Drover for clarification of that, but that's what I read elsewhere. I may need to apologise to Drover for leaking that, but if it is correct (I think it is) then there can be no apologies for alerting folk to this dog's need.

Sad part is, she is just one of so many advertised on free ads every week, as part of the current unregulated, unseen, unknown tide of animal abuse in the UK via back yard breeding.

One-Man puppy farms abound, probably in a quiet residential street near you.

Thankyou MsT...Yes jean 9kg when she should be more like 16kg.

The vet thinks the leg was broken a while ago as it has healed solidly. With regards to the 1k bill...That is just what he gave off the top of his head, I really don't know how much over it will go as she has been referred to an orthopedic surgeon who's initial consultation is almost £200 !

Today is going to be spent phoning around vets thats specialise in orthopedics and asking whether they would possibly take payments in stallments (large ones) so that it can be done sooner rather than later as she has been quite lame the last 2 days.

I hope admin dont mind but this is her facebook page...

I have just looked at her photo with tears in my eyes.  She is the same colour as my beautiful, gentle, huge boy.  Not fat, but muscle at 19kg and I have hugged him so tight.

That poor, poor bitch, it breaks my heart.
