Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Early signs - any connection with litter size ???
- By lucysmith [gb] Date 05.01.12 12:56 UTC
Just a thought as my girl is acting quite bizarrely since mating 2 weeks ago! I doubt there is a connection between the size of a litter and early pregnancy signs but am interested in others thoughts.

Piper was mated 2 weeks ago, since then she is flirting like crazy with all my other dogs, even the girls ?? she is also ravenous and is acting like she is constantly starving, she 'stole' a whole chicken (thankfully raw) from the kitchen side last night, this is unheard of with her. When she isn't flirting and stealing she is trying to squeeze her 40kg frame onto my lap lol. I have checked my notes from her last pregnancy and she didn't act like this, although she did start to act like i was starving her from 3 weeks onwards and went on to have a big litter of 13 monsters.

Any thoughts??? i hate the waiting game, scan can't come quick enough!!

Just had my girl scanned and is in whelp, she has been very clingy and acting like i am starving her, so good signs i would say.
Dont think it has anything to do with numbers just hormones i would say... Good Luck ..:)

Congrats on your girl :-) i guess i was kinda thinking that the more pups, the higher the level of hormones?? so would that determine whether or not they show earlier signs??

Yes i know what you mean, but my breed dont have large numbers and she has been so soft from the begining so guess not then...
Thanks :)

I've only had one act like that and that was my last litter, she was eating like she was starving - she had just 2 pups so I guess she still had the room for the food, her first litter she went off her food by around 3 weeks post mating

I've got one like this at the moment and hopefully just under 3 weeks pregnant.  She was one of two, a small litter for the breed so more than likely she'll have a small litter too LOL.

Like Sharon M, both mine had big appitites and small litters.  A 2 and a 1 so guess teh room idea could be an indicator maybe.  See how she goes as she progresses.
