Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / no pups on scan?
- By Pazza28 [je] Date 01.01.12 15:46 UTC
Hi,
My bitch we think is pregnant so we took her to the vets for a scan and it turned out that there were no pups! Even thought she has all the pregnancy symptoms. She was scanned on day 30 and now it is day 34 there was no stringy stuff coming from her vulver. We think that this could be a phantom pregnancy but we also think thatbthe scan could be wrong. As we have heard of wrong scannings. She has had a enlargement of nipples and a gaining in weight.
has any body had a false scan from the vets?
İf so please help!!!!!

Not a lot of help other than to say a breeder friend of mine has twice been told by vet that her bitch (different bitch each time) isn't in pup, only to go back the following week and pups to be seen. So, yes, they don't always show up. At 28 days they're not huge, my vet refers to them as being the size of walnuts! So possibly if the person scanning isn't that skilled. If you search on this site for this subject you'll find many postings from people who have been told on scan their bitch isn't pregnant, but gone on to produce pups.

Equally, of course, it may be a false pregnancy. I've been there, done that. In that instance I decided to follow my bitches lead, she was giving me all the signs of being pregnant right up to 8 weeks, and despite 2 scans saying she wasn't in pup, I treated her as though she was. She wasn't, and at 8 weeks she seemed to give up the 'joke' and return to normal. But unless 100% sure she isn't pregnant, I'd rather err on the safe side in terms of her health and that of any possible pups.

My vet normally offers a free scan at 5 weeks if pups haven't been seen at 4 weeks. Not all will, but might be worth asking.

>My bitch we think is pregnant

When you say "think" have you purposely mated her?  (Just trying to establish if she is supposed to be pregnant!)  :-)

I agree with Trialist, if you have had a bitch mated, always treat her as pregnant.  I only ever got caught once!  :-)

But she was still Panacur'd from day 40 as any other bitch that I had purposely mated.  (She just hadn't taken.)

Hi,
Thanks for the reply.
We mated her with another breed and we saw them locked together. The neighbour definetly saw them locked in for at least ten minutes. A year old.
She has put on alot of weight and her nipples have enlarged alot as well but the scan has shown no pups!
Not even a singleton. And if she was going to have pups she would be having them around the end of this month or 1st of Febuary. What are your recomendations?
Thanks

I'm not sure where to start! Sounds like a bizarre cross to me, sorry but it does. 1 year old is far too young to be having puppies at all. At the very least you should be doing all the health tests for both breeds, and at best reconsidering the idea of breeding at all, let alone creating yet more crossbreeds. And the fact that your idea of a safely supervised mating is that the neighbour 'saw them locked in' leaves me speechless! The correct term is tied, and you should never allow dogs to mate without supervision - suppose she had panicked and badly bitten the dog, or suppose she'd tried to run and had injured him by struggling and panicking. I'm afraid I have to hope that the scan is right and she is not having puppies. Then please buy and carefully read 'The Book of the Bitch' which will give you a lot of food for thought and you can make a more informed decision on whether risking your little girl is a good idea or not, when she is old enough! Please don't take offence because most of us will be against the idea of mating your girl, we honestly have her best interests at heart, as I'm sure you will when you have read more on the subject.

Thank you Lucydogs for your advice and we will be getting her spayed if she is not pregnant.

Why have you deliberately mated her to another breed?   In this current climate, the rescue kennels are full to overflowing with dogs urgently needing new homes.   Please, I urge you,to get her spayed regardless of whether she is in-whelp or now.   She is far too young.

That's wonderful news - I really do think you've made the right decision. :-)

At this stage (up to 42 days I beleive) you could still ask your vet to give the alizin injection in case she is pregnant to abort any puppies.

This Will be far less traumatic than having her rear a litter when she is only really a puppy herself.  Also finding good homes for a crossbred litter will not be easy.

One of my girls had 3 phantoms, each lasting 6 or 7 weeks and what they all had in common was the weight gain and other symptoms were very early, on one occasion I had mated 2 bitches within 2 days of each other, comparing the 2 the one having the phantom was bigger by 4 weeks than the one who went on to have 3 pups.

I always treated her as if she was pregnant, started Panacur and puppy kibble at 6 weeks and stopped when she would return to normal literally over night.

She did eventually get pregnant and her weight gain etc was much slower.

So signs and symptoms are not always proof of a pregnancy, depending on the breed the pups will be vary in size and some carry them up in their rib cage early on making it hard to scan.

With her only being 12 months old she may not be mentally or physically mature enough to cope with a litter and you will have to hand rear them, so be prepared in advance.

Cheers for the advice guys.
Please keep them coming in as we are still puzzled if or id not she is pregnant even though the scan has said no pups.Does anyone know any stories that the scan has said no pups but there were some?
Thanks

As mentioned in my post, use the search facility on this forum and you'll come up with quite a number of such stories!

Thanks Trialist.

My scanner has always been spot on whether puppies or not, wouldn't use anyone else. She is a sheep scanner, not a vet though.

Thnx will try to get a sheep scanner soon.
