Hi,

Having looked at the FAQs and doing a search I can't find anything on this. Can someone please help me out with commands used for gundogs as I know many of them are different for example drop (the toy/dummy etc) = Dead

Please fill me in on more.

Thanks in advance.

the commands can be what you want them to be, so long as your dog knows. however for working i would teach your dog hold rather than drop it. you want the dog to retrieve to hand, not drop it.

Yes after I posted I almost edited it to say - in my house 'dead' means put it in my hand!

But there must be commonly used commands? Other than that one?

there are diff commands. but, whether working or not the commands i use are the same, I say sit at home and sit on shoots, some people like to 'hup' for a sit on a shoot. but as i say commands are between you and your dog and so long as you  and your dog know the meaning that is whats important. I remember years ago some americans on our shoot came up to ask what a particular command was that they had heard me use often. i couldnt think what they meant at first, then i realised it was 'Whizzgone', to me and my girls it meant 'find it'. our own language! as i say again it it what it means to you and your dog. you do the same in conventional training. if sit means the laying on the floor position then so be it, if bananna means bum on the ground position, then that is what that position is.

I am sure there are variations across the country and even perhaps variations in a breed. As others have said it matters not what you use as long as the dog understands what is required.
for us the common commands are ::
Sit ( if close) or long blast on whistle ( at distance) = bum on floor and look at me command
back = if the dog is facing you and you want it to turn and run directly away from you for a retrieve.
out = with the dog sat at your side to send the dog away from you in direction of hand signal
lost or hie lost = given to indicate approx area of game / dummy. dog should stop running and hunt area
get on = to commence hunting in direction of hand signal
two quick pips on whistle = used when hunting to indicate you want dog to turn back across the beat.
push it out = send dog into flush game from the point.
recall = three quick pips

also the word 'seek' but lengthened eg: "seeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek"

We use 'HUP' for sit (less obtrusive than 'sit', but sometimes not so effective;-) )
'Where's ee' for searching in a tight area.
'Get out' with arm direction for directing sideways.
'Get back' for going straight back

and the ubiquitous 'Oi - what d'ye think you're doing' which is commonly used with flatcoats and labs   ;-)

Thank you everyone, I think I do remember most of them, I did a very small amount of gundog training but it was a while ago. So far we have a sit on command, word or hand signal or whistle (getting a little distance, but not pushing it at mo). I am using 'on' with a directional hand signal to send her from me to the toy or dummy and dead to ask her to drop it in my hand.

I was intending to use hie lost (although we are not really needing it at mo, as only 4 months) but I really like the whizzgone! I will use 'back' when we are that stage and 'on' with directional arm signal again for redirection at a distance I think. I'm sure the 'oi black dog' will be used too, as we already call them black dog and red dog!

Jo - this is the other Jo that has Albert's daughter. She sends her Daddy kisses (but please don't tell him about all her boyfriends!!)
