Anyone know of anything that is good at getting tartar of teeth. Cannot give bones and will not chew on anything else.
Petzlife gel works well but as it contains alcohol it doesn't taste very nice so you need a very amenable dog.I tried it on my sheltie and she hated it and I felt guilty using it so after doing a bit of googling I found Dentasure which I had to order from America,it tastes much nicer and contains no alcohol. My dogs' reactions varied from two who lick it off a spoon to one(the little pap) who will lick it if its mixed in with a tiny drop of peanut butter oil.Two of my dogs can't have bones either, one has an allergy to meat, the other, the pap, just gulps everything down in one go so too risky.

Thanks for that helenmd, I've just ordered the Dentasure after reading their website (I didn't realise Petzlife use alcohol in their product). It might be worth saying that they are doing a 2 for 1 offer at the moment, $40 for 8 oz of either spray or gel.

Many popular human mouthwashes (most of the Listerine varieties, for example) are alcohol-based. When you think about how Rescue Remedy (also alcohol-based) is recommended for dogs, it doesn't immediately write it off.
I bought some Petzlife gel to trial on my old boy, and although rather pricey it seems to be doing a really good job.
Two of my dogs can't have bones either, one has an allergy to meat, the other, the pap, just gulps everything down in one go so too risky. My Paps get bones that would taken them weeks to get through -no chance of gulping them down. :) The size I give can last an in season bitch for the entire 3 weeks when she has to be confined more. Even then there's lots left, that can be binned.

FYI you can get rescue remedy without alcohol now, as when the twin towers went down in the US, there were lots of people in recovery from alcoholism who needed a little something to help calm them, so an alcohol free one was devised!

I didn't fancy daily doses of of an alcohol based remedy, but that's just me.
My friend uses plaque off on his dogs-its really had an effect on his twelve year olds teeth,i was impressed!and to say all you do is sprinkle a bit on their food - -! wouldnt mind knowing how it works, but it certainly has!

What type of bones do you give your paps? I probably need to be a bit braver-mind you this is a dog who can't have dry food or even Ziwipeak(which is softer) in a bowl at all as she just inhales it and chokes. For such a clever dog she shows an amazing lack of sense when it comes to eating.
I use CSJ Seaweed & parsley. Small tub costs around £12 and will last 1 dog 8 months. I started using it a few years ago when my older girl started to get a bit of browning ... it did the trick. You just add a small scoop in with their meal on a daily basis.

colliespam where did he get it from?

I tried plaque off on an old Boxer lady, she wouldn't touch her food with it on.

I used Plaque Off on my elderly C.Spaniel but it didn't clear the real brownish teeth at the back, although it did whiten the front teeth well, but she was not too keen on eating the food with it sprinkled on either. I am about to start trying the CSJ seaweed and parsley as it has very good reviews.

Tried Fragaria which did not work for us (raw bones do but realise you're not after those).
if you google it ,it should come up.His dog had really brown teeth and appalling breath.Wouldnt say they are perfect, but much improved, and his breath is better than it was.You get a tiny scoop with it,dont need to put much on.I believe its seaweed based, and i think it cost about a tenner.
Ive just had a google(!)and its proden plaque off.

I prefer to use large recreational bones too, however, for one of my dogs I use Dentisept toothpaste which works great. No rubbing or anything needed, just putting it on their teeth and their tongue will do the rest. It has the advantage that it will help dogs with inflamed gums as well which is why I need to use it for one of my dogs.

just remember with plaque off you can't use it on dogs with hypothyroidism/hyperthyroidism.
It's anything with seaweed (because of iodine), and this product is based on seaweed.

Where would I find the website for dentisept as tried and nothing came up. My older dog which cannot have bones has quite bad back teeth with a black tartar line next to the gum that is what I am trying to get off.
