Hi all, can anybody tell me what causes a dog to slip mate? Everything went as normal. the dog entered the bitch, he seemed to be well in, but the bitch didnt hold him, she squirmed and struggled and he came out. The dog i has been used several times and she has had pups before. I hope someone has an answer as the bitch is comming back tomorrow. Merry xmas to all out there.

Slip matings can happen when the bitch doesn't draw on the dog's penis. You should be able to see this happening if you're at the 'business' end. Maybe she wasn't quite ready, that could have caused her to 'squirm and struggle' too. Also some bitches can need a firmer handler than others. Did her owner say how they got on last time?

Slip matings can still result in puppies though.

Maybe she just wasn't quite ready - better luck when she returns to stud

We've just this afternoon had our bitch scanned from a half hearted slip mating and I'm happy to report the scanner has counted 7-8 puppies so anything is possible :-)

As the previous postee has confirmed pups can & do result from slip matings but in the incidence you describe I would doubt it. A bitch I have is the result of a slip mating, she is one of 5 but the mating was more lengthy(nearly 10 mins..assisted by holding the 2 together) than your bitch.

You sometimes have to hold the 2 together till the tie is complete or else they just come apart, the stud also has to be fully inside the bitch or she has nothing to tie to and it fails.

It all depends on what stage he was at when he slipped as the middle bit is the sperm rich semen.

Hi there,

One of my bitches had 6 puppies from numerous slip matings and no tie and another of my bitches had 3 puppies from numerous slip matings and no tie so it is certainly possible but with just one slip mating its probably less likely!

I have a very small breed though and so 6 puppies is enormous! And all that from a slip :-)
