Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Day 63 from 2nd mating!
- By crofty [gb] Date 11.12.11 18:23 UTC
My girl today is on day 63 from her 2nd mating. This is her 2nd litter, her first 2 years ago she whelped on day 63 from her 1st mating, so is now 2 days over.  From your experience how far over the due date have you allowed your own to go before seeing a vet?  Thank u x

My last litter was born (without veterinary intervention, but after vet checks) on day 68 from first mating, 66 from second mating. All well and healthy. :-)

My last litter was born on day 68/66 natural birth, no problems,  she was checked over by my vet and booked in for a c-section at 9am, she started giving birth at 1am.

I think breed matters here.

I have a breed notorious for a gestation period of only 8 weeks.  I can't remember any bitch I've owned (of this breed) that hadn't whelped by day 63.  So, I would be having a seizure.

You do have to take breed into consideration.

Did you have blood tests confirming ovulation before the matings, if not then she may not have ovulated till after the matings and then 48hrs for eggs to ripen during which time the sperm has remained viable.

My own bitch had her first litter on day 61 from one mating on day 12 and her second litter on day 63 of the second matings on day 12 and 14.

So no two gestational periods are the same in any one bitch.

I hope all goes well, get her checked over at the vets as primary inertia caused by a big litter or singleton can prevent labour ever starting naturally.

I've never had one go over either, I was having a seizure....lol.  That had to be the longest 5 days ever!

She started started shredding and panting late last night and has a little rest every now and again.  We have been for a little walk, but still no pushing!  As it has been over 12 hours should I be concerned??  Her last litter where all born within a few hours of panting and shredding.  A litter I had earlier this year, resulted in emergency c section, so I am so scared that this will go the same. The previous girl was suffering Inertia, i have done nothing but read BOTB but is doesn't put my mind at rest.  I was giving it till lunch time to take her to the vets for a check over, but am also thinking that maybe I am overreacting as she hasn't tried to push yet.  x

> she hasn't tried to push yet

I would be on my way to the vet, and expecting inertia again.

Any news yet?

Hopefully you are busy delivering pups.

Yes she delivered 4 Beautiful pups from about 2 to 5pm.  Took her to the vet who had no concerns as no pups where in the birth canal but gave an oxytocin injection. Within 15 mins, she was pushing, the first had a big head and weighed in allot heavier than the other 3.   Thank u everyone xx
