Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Puppy bladder problem

I woke up this morning to find my 6 week old puppy making noises (little moans) and although he was alert he was only walking around slowly and not running/ jumping at all. He wouldn't suck mum or eat so I took him straight to the vet. While there he urinated a few blood spots. They said that either his bladder is twisted or blocked, and the prognosis is not good.
He had 2 injections, 1 betamox and 1 something else for pain and to relax his bladder so that any blockage could pass. They said that he could operate but that it probabily wouldnt work. He is home now and wont eat or drink but seems to not be in much pain and his tail is wagging. He is dripping diluted blood colour urine.
Does anyone have an experience of this? thanks

Sorry, no but just wanted to wish you well with him.

Thanks, he has just done a small poo and had a drink. He is on his own and is warm.
He is alert and he keeps having a little walk then going back to bed for a sleep.
The vet said that if he gets worse to bring him in to be pts :( but I hope that this doesnt happen. He is still moaning every so often and his bladder is obviously painful. I wish I could do more to help him, but dont know what, as he wont eat anything.

To be honest better now than later (when perhaps in a new home), let him go without pain.

This seems like a very serious diagnosis with  very little investigation,  has a nasty urine infection been ruled out by obtaining a sample for testing initially for protein which indicates infection and then lab test to get what bug is responsible and correct antibiotics given.  How has the pup managed his weeing for 6 weeks or is  this a problem that can develop some weeks after birth?

I know from person experience how painful a UTI can be when a locum out of hours GP gave the wrong antibiotic even when I said I'd not known that to be used for UTI's,  he didn't change his mind,by the Monday morning my wee was like pea soup and brought tears to my eyes each time I went to the loo despite drinking 4 litres of water to dilute the urine so it wouldn't hurt so much, it took 2 courses of antibiotics to clear the infection and 2 weeks for the pain to stop.

If you have not had the urine tested then put a clean bowl  between your knees and hold the pup over the bowl whilst giving him a drink it may take a while depending on when last wee'd, we used to do this with little girls on the prem unit, little boys were easier because we had tubing which fitted over their winkie and we just kept checking for a result periodically.

I truly hope it isn't something so serious as to mean he has to be PTS.

I have just had a 3 week old pup with a urine infection. She was having a little moan when she was weeing and only passing small amounts followed by drops of blood. Vet gave antibiotics and she was fine. I made sure she got plenty of cool boiled water. She is now 7 weeks.

Hope your pup is ok xx

Im sorry to say that he went downhill that night and passed away.:( I am devestated about loosing him, and keep thinking that I should have got a second opinion when we first went in. I trusted that vet that we saw because he is known in the area to be very good with dogs, and has been good when I have seen him before. I never will know what it was that he had, and cant find anyone else that had the same thing. :(

His siblings are doing well, are dont have any problems, and I have never had any problems in these lines before.
thank you for your replies.

Sorry to hear about that Im. I'm sure you did all you could. Sadly some pups just aren't meant to grow up. Always hard though.

How heartbreaking after getting him to 6 weeks and surely thinking that by now he was over the most dangerous time for new puppies. Poor you! :-(
