My OH decided to keep the first foster dog we had and I've been taking him training, he is really a delight to train and picks things up really quickly but only if you lure him.
When trying things like 101 things to do with a box he will just stand totally still staring at me and won't engage with the box at all even when I play with it, after just standing and staring for a few minutes he will then do the behaviour he's been currently learning though luring (at the moment down). I've tried rubbing the box with something smelly but it only worked the once to get him to sniff it, so I managed to reinforce him once at least, lol,
How can he be encouraged to offer different behaviours instead of just standing there glaring at me?

You have to click and reward the slightest interaction, so that means at first even just looking in the right direction. Baby steps -one tiny step at a time. Looking in the right direction, then looking at it, then touching it etc.

also if you have been luring behaviours he will be expecting a treat to appear to lure him into what to do but baby steps is definitely the answer.  Have you introduced the clicker?

Just thought I'd update, Rigsby is now much more confident at trying things out without luring and all the baby steps have just come together :) we had a really good time just now, well done Rigsby!
I was expecting too much and was missing the little things he was doing such as looking at the box like you said Marianne so he was getting confused and frustrated, also think I was comparing him to my lurcher who will start doing all sorts of exciting things when I play the box game, he has been used to the clicker for a couple of years so it was a bit daft of me to compare. I also hadn't considered the point that dnvbiker made regarding the luring and him expecting a treat to appear to show him what to do so it took him a bit longer to realise that he could get good things even if there didn't seem to be any about.
