Topic Dog Boards / General / Cost of importing a dog by air

My husband works abroad and has 'fostered' a dog that we are now considering trying to import so he can come and live here with us. The dog is from a non listed country (on defra site) so we know after a rabies jab he will still have to be quarantined. He will hopefully travel from the country he is in, to cyrus and I was wondering if anyone had ever flown a dog in from Cyprus before and if so how much did it cost?

Really we are just initially trying to work out if it is realistic that we can rescue this little man.

From January he will not have to be Quarantined if he can be titre tested and wait 3 months.

A friend imported a medium size dog from USA New York) to Heathrow, in a 36 x 26 x 26inch 12kg airline crate and it was over £1000.

If someone is flying with the dog then it is usually cheaper to fly the dog as excess baggage to an Eu Country (I flew with my bitch to Brussels) and then drive to UK taking ferry or Euro tunnel to UK.

That's the new rules for non listed countries similar to what we have now for listed countries but only 3 month wait from titre test.

So Quarantine will only apply for the period until they become compliant if people can't Wait the 3 month waiting period for non listed countries or the 3 weeks for listed, or if paperwork not in order.

Be interesting as the existing Q kennels will have to close as they won't be viable.  Will we end up with DEFRA run facilities (like in Australia), maybe those at Heathrow, for the few animals that will need it for shorter periods.

So just to check I understand correctly, he can stay where he is, get his rabies jab and titre test, wait for 3 months to pass then come straight in from where he is? He won't have to go to an EU country first? If thats the case we will hopefully just fly him back with hubby when he is next home on leave.

Yep that's it, but instead of a Pet passport they have a third country certificate, but I would point out that to fly into UK they have to come as cargo which is much more costly than flying him as excess baggage (same place in hold in same size crate).

So would be cheaper for him to fly to say Brussels or Amsterdam and drive to UK via Tunnel, Calais to Dover or Dunkirk to Dover ferry routes.  Probably be same cost for him plus dog and drive, as one way Cargo and red tape to fly to UK on a designated route and airline .

To facilitate the changes to the scheme all carries that currently operate an approved route will become approved to transport pets from anywhere in the world into the airport/port/station to which they are currently approved to transport pets.
