Hi All,

My bitch had a litter in March - 8 healthy babies  - and had her next season at the end of October.

She is now seeming very depressed and I'm very worried. She is all set to be spayed in January, however I hsve no experience of Pyo and am worried about her depressed behaviour.

My elder spayed bitch keeps mounting her

Have you taken her temp?  I'd be checking that.  Is she drinking excessively?  If she is then that's another sign of possible Pyo.  Our bitch took a week to get to the stage where she was depressed, lethargic and 'flat'.  She lost her appetite at the start of the week but because she had been mated, we thought it was morning sickness.

If at all worried then I'd get a vet to check her.  If it were a closed Pyo then there wouldn't be an outward sign like a discharge and it can develop to a dangerous stage quickly.  Sorry don't mean to frighten you but it's something I'm always paranoid about now as I've seen how horrible it can be.

The mounting behaviour of your other bitch indicates there may be an infection somewhere 'down there'.

Really hope it's nothing to worry about x

The only sign of my bitch's pyo was a loss of appetite. She wasn't drinking excessively, she didn't have a high temperature and was outwardly very well. My Vet covered her with antibiotics for 3 days and then wanted her checked. He was still unhappy and so did a blood test which was inconclusive. He then scanned and saw enough to want to operate immediately. This was a closed pyo so without his vigilance we could well have lost her. I would most definitely get her checked out. My Vet reckons that this is the optimum time for a pyo, approx 6 weeks after a season.

hi, i would get her checked out at the vet asap. one of mine had a closed pyo and the only signs was she was depressed and not herself  :-( i just had a gut feeling that it was something really bad. it was a very bad pyo and we were very lucky, she completely recovered but the vet said she definately would not have been here had we left it another day :-(

One of my rescue fosters had a pyo, as well as the depressed behaviour, she did a lot of 'praying' a bit like a playbow but still, so front legs in a down and bum in the air.  It is a sign of stomach pain.  She needed emergency surgery.

Fingers crossed all is well, i'd have a trip to the vets to be safe.
