Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Insurance that covers whelping?

Hi Does anyone else other than The Kennel Club offer cover for possible whelping complications?
Thanks
Paula

Sorry don't know if the KC does but I doubt it however it is possible to get cover for anything but it may well cost a good deal as the risk is high.

I only know of the Kennel Club Insurance that covers whelping. It is expensive, but I was told that as it is a monthly policy you could take out a policy  to cover that period and then cancel.
May work out cheaper than  vet fees if you feel you may have problems.

I think I read that it has be in place a few weeks before whelping though.

have to set it up 12 weeks previous to actual whelping, 3 weeks before mating :-)

NFU Mutual cover the cost of ""emergency sections"" a breeder friend of mine and a phone call to NFU confirmed this ..! but only on emergency cases to save the life of the bitch, I am guessing that thats all that is required for most peoples peace of mind, again it would have to be set up previous to mating the bitch.!

Both my bitches were covered for whelping problems with Pet plan. Absolutely no hassle, paid up no problems :)

where they emergency sections, they all seem to say that anything to do with whelping/breeding is not covered, but is that just elective things..

vets are usually 'helpful' in filling the forms out for insurance firms.

When I spoke to the KC about this they said it was 12 weeks before going to stud. Just flipped through the policy booklet and found;

Significant Exclusions

*  Any amount for fertility examinations or gestation and whelping
treatment arising within 12 weeks of the start of this policy section.

I did think 12 weeks was a long time to take out the insurance before going to stud.

Pet plan has a separate cover.  By the time you added up the cost and their maximum layout and the excess etc it really would have ended up covering much. I opted not to take it and had an emergency c section, but all in after everything (ie cost of the insurance in the first place) I'd probably only have got maybe £300 back.

When we looked at breeders cover by the time we'd looked at the minimum term you can have it for, excess & cover cost we worked out the insurance would cost us £900.  Since a C-section is about £1000 (Depending on where you are and complications etc.) we decided it was worth just saving the money up and having it on standby instead.  It also meant we had the money in our hand incase of out of hours vets some of which it feels like you need a brown paper bag full of money to get through the door of...
