Before we buy a puppy we have to take into consideration that we work during the day. And feel it would be cruel to leave a dog inside all day.

Is the westie the kind of dog who would be okay outside during the day.........obviously in a heated kennel with a run attached.

Many thanks

I believe you will find that most people who know about dogs would not approve of a dog being left alone all day, either indoors or outdoors. To begin with, a dog is a pack animal, not a solitary animal like a cat.
You could easily be landed with behavioural problems because the dog is likely to get stressed at being left alone. For example it may bark or howl all the time, which (apart from the dog's distress) could cause problems with the neighbours.
Look carefully at your reasons for wanting a dog and consider the dog's feelings as well as your own.
My own view is that you would be better off with a cat.

PS It will be interesting to see whether other visitors/members agree or disagree with me.

Hi Alison :)
Lots of people work full time and keep dogs, quite happily. What about rehoming an older dog?
Do you have anyone who can pop in during the day, to play/walk the dog? Or maybe your work means you can come home during the day.
I do think a puppy in your situation may be unsuitable as pups need so much attention. But there are many older dogs who need homes, whom perhaps are used to being left for a few hours.
IMO a happy dog is one that gets the quality of time with its owner, not neccessarily quantity. Some dogs may have their owners at home all day but get no stimulation or attention.
Good luck:)
Ali :)
PS
Cannot find anything on a search about westie rescue. There are a few westie breeders on the board who may come along later and have some advice for you. They may also know of any westie rescue organisations. :)
PPS :D :D
Dont forget you can register with Champdogs. At least then you can reply on this thread and ask any more questions. :)
