My bitch is currently at the stud owners, we wanted to use one of her 2 dogs, however the one we picked is not proven/a maiden dog, he has had a sperm count and is ( at time of testing ) fertile for what thats worth.

The experienced sex pest today given the chance would have probably mated her, but the maiden dog hasnt'/doesn't try yet.

We have a dilemer, do we panic and use the sex pest or do we hold out to see if the maiden dog eventually works out what to do, I really don't want her to go over and miss, but its a risk if we hold out for the unproven maiden stud, he may not do anything.

what do people do in these situations.

use both and dna test the pups?
- By LindyLou [gb] Date 30.11.11 22:49 UTC
If she is a maiden then I would use the experienced dog, if the pedigrees are compatible.

If you really want to try with the maiden dog then give him a chance until the last possible day then use the other one.

Not much help really.

If the bitch will not be too old next season I would hold out for my first choice.

I would wait, if the dog is the dog you want to use then wait until he's more....experienced?

Used a maiden dog , and he just kissed her and faffed , but let me handle him , didn't get off when I knelt behind my bitch . So we had a cup of tea , with him drooling through the french windows. We vaselined  her , I knelt , holding her petticoats and held her vulva down with my left hand , going under the bitch infront of her stifle area. .Her tail was well to the side and she was arching her back....when the dog starts stabbing and given the  height is right (no mats needed etc ) I guide the vulva towards the dog so he can get the angle right ....once he's in I put   my right hand under his rump and once he has tied ,relax , and waited to see if he turned , which he did , even though a maiden .10 pups .....
it's a knack though , and the dog has to be interested in the first place , even though a maiden .

May be best to have a progesterone blood test taken and sent to idexx for the levels which will tell you if the has yet to ovulate, has ovulated or has gone over.

thanks Barbara, sounds like a plan.  Nothing is ever simple.

If you want a same day result as to whether she has gone over or not then you could ask your vet to do vaginal cytology.  Whilst these cannot predict ovulation exactly they can tell you when the bitch has gone over.  I've been in your position before waiting and hoping and then its too late to do the bloods so nowadays I try to do belts and braces and blood test anyway before I think things are getting too late.  A couple of misses from my girls have taught me this hence finding out about their small mating windows (as per my reply on your other post regarding ovulation).

Just delivered a blood sample to Fit&Fertile, nervously waiting for the results, but at least I'll know one way or another.!!!

Don't worry no need to panic yet that's only just ovulated:

This is the potocol to interpret Lab results for progesterone in nmol/L ::
0-2  nmol/L           Baseline concentrations too early to estimate ovulation
3 - 6 nmol /L        Minimum 2 days before ovulation expected however result of 3 - 4 nmol/L may persist for a week or longer before increasing. Earliiest estimating breeding 4 - 6 days but could be longer (re test needed)
7 - 12 nmol/L   Minimum 1 day before ovulation. Estimated window for breeding 3 - 5 days but could be longer  ( re test recommended)
13 - 18 nmol/L   Ovulation impending or just occurred. Estimated breeding window 2 - 4 days
19 - 31 nmol/L   Ovulation recently occurred. Estimated breeding window 1 - 3 days
32 - 64 nmol/L   Ova have matured, optimal potential for fertility.  Estimated breeding window  0 - 2 days
65 - 90 nmol/L   Ova have matured but aging, decreased potential for fertility.  Breed  at once
Above 90 nmol/L    Too late

What do Fit n Fertile test in?  If its ng rather than nmol then 14 ng equates to around 45 nmol which means if the blood was taken today then a mating today would be perfect!  By tommorow however she would be could be just starting to go over. Hopefully its nmol then as Brainless says she's only just getting to ovulation and gives you a few more days to get a mating.
- By yrlance Date 05.12.11 16:42 UTC
they gave my reading in ng over the phone..
- By snomaes [gb] Date 05.12.11 20:23 UTC
I'm fairly sure  Fit n Fertile test in ng.
- By klb [gb] Date 05.12.11 20:32 UTC
If your test results are in ng/l rather than the nmol/l you can convert the score and use the same table by following this method method ::
x ng x 3.18 = x nmol/l

so 14ng = 44.52nmol/l = optimal fertility. Breed 0-2 days
