I noticed my girl was limping slightly on our walk this morning. when i got hoome I could see that she had broken her dw claw and it was sticking out sideways at right angles to where it should be. Obviously very painful. After a lot of dithering and several false starts I decided that it would be far better if I were to whip it off myself rather than subject her to a visit to the vet which she hates and would mean waiting several hours before we could get an appointment. She is  so trusting she let me have another look and I cliped it off and she screamed so loud I feel really awful that I did that to her. it hasn't bled too much and I have given her some metacam and lots of cuddles and treats. I think I am a lot more traumatised by the experience than she is.

It is just possible the joint is dislocated and although you have dealt with the nail she will still be in pain from the joint. Lets hope not and that you will start to see an improvement in the next 24 hours or so.

Thanks. As far as I can see the toe looks ok but I will be monitoring her very closely and will take her to the vet if she does't improve. She is a very nervy dog and really struggles with the vets. If I had taken her there it would have caused her a huge amount of stress and  they would have needed to sedate her to remove the nail she panics that much. Although stressful for both of us I am sure that it was much better for me to remove the nail

I'm sure you did the right thing and that she will start to improve.
