Just looking for views on the oldest age to spay- with regards to risk of going under GA etc versus pyometra risks if you don't spay.

With modern anaesthesia and no ill health in the bitch I don't think there is an upper age, and as many quiote elderly bitches survive emergency spay when they have pyo (and are at deaths door)then doing it when fit and healthy must be a better option whatever their age.

I have had all mine spayed between five and 7 years of age.

The oldest one of mine has had a GA was 12 years (warty growth on eye lid), and came round from it very quickly.

I asked my vet this recently after one of mine had to have an emergency pyo op, he recommended spaying no later than 5yrs. 

Possibly this is different/later in a bitch that has been bred, as another vet on another occasion said that having had a litter usually prevented the bitch going on to have a pyo.  (However, this was not my personal experience!)

A lot of bitches will only just have had their first litter at that age. 

Certainly I would agree that any bitch that hasn't been bred from by five years old should then be spayed.

I've just had a b1tch of 10yrs spayed. She came through it just as well as her 7 yr old daughter which is the age I usually have bitches spayed.

Did he say why? Surely it is breed dependent? Some breeds are barely at full maturity at 5!
