Topic Dog Boards / General / DDB Has been bleeding on and off for 6 weeks (1st season)

Hi there
Can anyone help or provide information on this please
My bitch DDB has had her 1st season at the age of 12 months, she has been on and off bleeding now for nearly 6 weeks, She first started bleeding just before she turned 1 then had the discharge and then bled a bit again, this lasted about 4/5 days. A couple of weeks later she bled really heavy for about a week but there was no discharge. Now yesterday i noticed tiny watery blood (very thin) on the floor.

Is this normal?? Is this something a bitch goes through when they have there first season or really should i be taking her to the vets

Many Thanks

Sounds like a Split season.

Some bitches will start the season, but then the hormone levels are not high enough to continue the process and everything stops only for them to come in properly about a month later.  I tend to call that a false start as the later season is a full length one and they ovulate about the end of second week.

Keep an eye out for any sign of ill health or an unpleasant smell to the discharge, excessive drinking etc.

Pyometra (womb infection that can cause blood poisoning and eventual death) is rare with a first season, but has been known.

It's certainly not unusual for a first season to be prolonged, not in my experience anyway. The first time it happened with one of ours, I phoned her breeder. She said two of her bitches were the same, and she also thought it was a feature of that particular line. You could always run it past your DDB bitch's breeder, that might put your mind at rest. But in the meantime, just keep an eye on her.

Think this like any other time you are worried about your bitch you need to ask the vet.

It is not uncommon as others have said but it could be that something is wrong so check it out.
