My spaniel did that, buried any treat, chew or bone in the border and then dig it up a few minutes later and eat it, maybe the soil added extra flavour, he was an only dog back then so no fear of it being stolen.
my jess was always burying bones, but seems to have stopped now.Gwen still does if she doesnt fancy it at the time,or to hide it from the others!

I do have one who tried to bury a bone on the steps leading up to the lawn - obviously didn't make much headway so went up to the lawn and dug soil up and covered the bone in it .......... still can't decide whether she was very clever or just a dumb blonde :) :) See my profile for a link :)
I had a cat that used to wait next to me while I dug holes in the garden to plant my latest acquisitions. I'd just turn round for a few seconds to knock the plant out of the pot and by the time I was ready to pop the plant in the cat would be squatting in the hole to leave the plant a little present (ew).
Lola's new place is the Koi pond. The wall is about 4ft (were she can access) stands back and watches it drop to the bottom through the window. OH is not pleased, in with his net to scoop them out.
