Hi All,
Im a little confused.Im with edf for both my fuel,im on standard direct debt for gas and elec.I always glance at my bills and im always in credit and normally, after summer i have quite a bit in there and i get it back.On monday i got my electric statement and i was 179 in credit.Oh lovely i thought, the bill had a meter reading taken on the 24 th of september.I rang them up and asked for the money, they asked me for a meter reading which i gave, they then turn around and say im actually only 5 pounds in credit as i have used the 179,now thats impossable,in 8 weeks they are saying i have used 2 *106 (which is my direct debit to them)and an extra 179 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!What do they think i have been doing, heating the neighbourhood. There is no way this is right,i dont have any heating apart from wood,im home alone all day and very very carefull with eletric, the fact they think i have used extra 20 pounds a week is stupid.I stated this to 4 of thir workers and all i got back, was that,"this is what my computer is telling me,so this is right" Thet said i had used 1210 units of elctric in those 8 weeks, now 1750 units is 190 pounds,i used much much less and already paid 2 lots of direct debits so i said to them,i have given you 212 in dd and you have 179 credit, and they still said, the computer is right. One chap said to me,"you are using 4 units a day more"i said,ok,4 units is 50 pence, over 8 weeks at 50 p a day does not work out at 179 extra. So i have left it that they are sending me a bill to look at then they are going tostick my elec up by 90 a month,i told them to get knotted and wil go elsewhere.Im sorry for the rant, knowing me,im wrong, but everyone i have explained this to,think im right
Help,
jo

Have you double checked the reading of the meter against the reading they have/you gave.  Could be as simple as transcription of a number.

I changed from EDF a couple of years ago, because they totally mislead me when the salesman signed me up.  Won't go back.

I changed to npower and got a decent deal which only ran out in Sep/Oct time.  I decided to do a search and comparison, by keying in my actual usage.  The recommendation was to go with eon, which I have now done.  I am a particularly heavy user, even though I live alone.  (I am a hothouse flower.)

However, I have since received 2 lots of rebate from npower, as part of my discount, one was over £200 and the other was over £100, so I may look at them again next year.  It is very worthwhile going to the trouble of changing suppliers annually.

If you had a meter read 24 Sept, why has it taken them 8 weeks to send your statement!! If your statement had come shortly after the reading & you are £179 in credit then yes you are entitled to have YOUR OWN MONEY back...never forget that..it is your money which has been over paid. I find it had to believe you would have used that much electric in 8 weeks.
As suggested make sure the meter is read by you again(to check the digits arent wrong way round).

I personally wouldnt touch Eon with a barge pole..once with them you will find it very difficult to leave(should you wish too)...they kept poaching an account we had in another house from the supplier WE WANTED...!!!!!

I never have any trouble with Southern Electric(Electric & Gas) if I'm in credit when I request MY MONEY from them... The statement for SE comes within a week if the meter is read by them(BG used to read every quarter when I had my gas with them).

Was your bill from an actual meter reading or was it estimated? If the bill on the 24th was an estimated reading, and maybe its been a while since there was an actual meter reading then I can see how this would happen.

I was going to say the same chaumsong - if your meter readings have been estimated then any shortfall in the estimate will have built up over time and now you have given them an actual reading the shortfall needs to be paid.

I read my meter every time I get a bill and notify my energy supplier if their reading is less than the actual reading. If it is an over estimate I tend to pay what they have asked and let the surplus build up towards my winter bills as I know they will be higher than the summer ones - I pay my bills quarterly rather than by DD.

I am also very unhappy with EDF energy. We owned a small house which was rented out. On June 11th the tenant moved out and we informed EDF, by phone, giving them up to date meter readings. On 31st August contracts were exchanged for the sale of the house. We sent them the readings at that time.
So: the house was empty for 7 weeks, with the hot water switched off and only the occasional light on. EDF sent us a bill for £68.10, from June 12th to 18th October. I sent it back to them with a note written on it explaining the situation. Then we received a final notice. I rang them and followed it up with a letter.
We have now received a "final bill" - for £282.27, from June 12th to 30th September!!!! I have rung again and the "Customer services manager" promised to ring me back - which of course she hasn't. Unfortunately we didn't keep the meter readings, we've never ever needed to do that before, and they evidently don't have a clue. What a way to run a business. :-(

Hooray! A result at last! Needless to say, the Customer Services Manager never did ring back. So today I rang again, and spoke to a pleasant young man, who looked into the issue once more. He told me that they now had all the meter readings I'd sent, and that we owed - £11.96! Which I've now very happily paid. :-)
However, I'm still staggered that they ever came up with an amount of £282.27 - it appears to have been a figure just plucked out of the air. Oh well, all's well that ends well...

They once came and fitted a new meter here - no idea why, presumably an upgrading thing.
The next quarter they sent us a bill for over £4,000 !!!
They had used the last reading from the old meter and then the new reading from the new meter. But they still took some convincing lol

One very stupid company had used a meter reading from one of properties taken more than 3 years previous...was quite a hefty bill as you can imagine...never mind we had been using & paying from a different company inbetween but we wondered where they got the figure from.
Up until about a year or so ago I had 8 years bills from my current address, I now only keep 3 years worth..dont ask me why though!!!...lol

Glad you got it sorted...they were only £270 pounds out then..lol!!!
