i took my girl china in today for a ceaserian after sucessive complications,
she was doing great her waters broke, she was having contactions which were getting closer together and then i noticed a greenish discharge which the vet said was normal..i was not happy about it but agreed to watch her for another 1/2 hour then i phoned back..nightmare! the vet had left the phone off the hook and i couldnt get through(the operator told me this when she checked the line) so 1 hour and !/2 later i managed to get another vet from another surgery who said the green was normal not to worry even though the contractions had stopped but she couldnt treat china as she werent registered with her!!!!!!!!! i was frantic and said bugger ethics i had a dog that was obviously having problems as all had been fine and now it werent. she then said she,d contact my vet which she did thankfully as i got a phone call.
soon as i said "green discharge" he said get her over immediately and he would meet me there.
at 8.30 pm she had a ceasarian and he phoned to tell me that her uterus was actually twisted back on itself so their was noway she could have given birth and also one of the pups was attached to the uterine wall..he asked my permission to spay her unless i wanted her to have more litters but i said that i wanted her spayed for obvious reasons!
i now am feeding two big brown and white shih tzu boys and a little gold black masked girl who are all extemely noisy and giving mum hell.
she wasnt keen on them at first and left them in the basket but she has settled back in since ive fed them and shes been licking them thankfully.
1.00am is feed no 2!

Thank god with the research you have done this time you followed your instincts and saved the bitch, and the pups.

Breeding can often go wrong, which people going into it on a whim, as it is natural sometimes find to their cost. Some just have Dumb good luck, and wonder what all the fuss is about!

The most common cause of death for women used to be childbirth before the advent of modern obstetrics.

It is why breeders on the Forum get so passionate.

Admin: post moved here

mum and pups have all been checked this morning by vet and all are doing well.she is feeding and licking them all and seems content but im feeding her by hand and giving her milk in syringe as she wont leave pups and is obviously exhausted after last night!
had one funny episode.i heard yelping at 4.10 this morning so jumped out of bed and there was china and a pup out of her bed and she was trying to pick it up unsucessfully so i tried to get it and she wouldnt let me so nudged it under a chair where their was a donald duck macdonalds toy.well she went to get pup, missed totally and picked up the toy and jumped back in her basket! well i put pup in then she frantically cleaned pup as if she hadnt mistaken the toy for it at all!!!!!!!!!!!!
she seems a lot more lucid today thankfully.
the two boys weighed 10 ounce 10 1/2 ounce and the little brown girl is 8 ounce.
i noticed the little girl had splayed front legs which the vet had missed last night so i shown him today but he said that he had seen worse cases so i hope she is going to be okay.....he did say some might put them down but obviously i didnt want that if he says she is probably fine..so im a bit worried about that but i will have to keep an eye on her.
he said she was the one who was stuck so shes had a bit of an ordeal i expect.
china seems to favour her a bit and makes sure she is getting milk which is good as some dogs ignore the weaker ones dont they?
thanks for your help and advice
joanne

Hi,

Re the splayed legs. Is hew chest rather flat? this could be swimmers, and can be sorted out. Type swimmers into the search box, after clicking search at the top ot the page.

I would start with masaging the legs and body into the right shape.

I had a pup who must have had a front paw bent back at the front pastern in the wrong direction, in the womb, it looked back to front!
the ligaments seemed pulled. I massaged the paw daily, and by the time they got on their feet there was no sign of the problem. I suppose it is because the bones are so soft and only grissle, that things can be persuaded back into prper shape/alignment.

Those puppy weights are very good, asin my breed pups average 10 - 12 onces, and |I have had 6 ounces to 18 ounces, that have all turned out normal size.

hi brainless, her chest seems like the other two.........ive looked at it and felt it also in comparison to the other two pups and it seems the same
she is littler than the other two so seems a bit more fragile but ive felt the leg joints and they feel pretty similar too. the vet said hes seen ones bent over backwards and ones with all four legs splayed back so i think he thought this was mild in comparison but i dont know whether im worrying about nothing at the minute. im observing her closely. ive read about the other "swimmers" its a pity their isnt any photos so i could compare them.
what dogs do u breed? chinas first pup the singleton was about 15 to 20 ounces i reckon in comparison to these as she was a whopper..she couldnt walk for a bit as she was so big but shes a nice size now bigger than her mum but not as big as dad and shes also got a cross of both their temperments which is nice.
thankfully chinas been spayed so i dont need to worry about that no more! im also gonna get dad done as hes a bit of a sex manic i think! i dont know if dogs fall in love but he doted on china since i got her he used to give her toys as a pup and bits of food however he dont get on with his daughter at all but we had to keep her as the vets said she was a crossbreed at first so i never knew what she would turn into!
thanks

Gosh poor China producing pup of that size. My breed are about 20kg (44 pounds), and around 20 inches at the shoulder. My oldest bitch had trouble passing a 14 ounce pup in her first litter, let alone somet6hing the size of China's daughter.

It is a good thing you are having Dad done, as he could well mate with his daughter, and you wouldn't really want that, especially as you don't know too much about their ancestors, and whether such an incestuous union mught not produce problems latent in the lines.
- By china [gb] Date 12.01.03 21:59 UTC
yes it is a geat fear that he will show an interest in his daughter as although i know that breeders do do this to produce better standards etc to me its a bit all too incestuous and i dont have any intention to have any more litters..lovely as all the pups have been and lucky too!
i am so glad that they are all doing so well and ill keep you up to date on her "swimmer" if indeed she is one.
u dont fancy a trip down to torbay to have a look do you brainless? lol

The "standards" will only improve if they are good to start with. Inbreeding strengthens the genes (both good and bad) that are already there - it cannot introduce new ones. Good points will be enhanced; bad points will be doubly hard to eradicate in future generations.
