Can't believe some dogs owners ideas about house training. Someone has posted on FB how fed up they are will their puppy peeing in the house. Reply was make them sleep outside in a kennel, after a few nights in the cold they will appreciate your house and not pee >:O

Unfortunately, due to a conflict of interest I can do neither.

I hate it I do. Theres a place i sometimes walk my dog, it has houses all around it, and can always hear dogs barking from one house. Never thought anything of it untill one day they had cut all their hedges down for some reason. Then I saw a big(ish) kennel at the end of their garden (its a big long garden) with about 3 or 4 golden labs in going mad barking. I though it was terrible. And I guess the only reason they are at the ent of the long garden is so the household can not hear the barking or crying. Another thing I saw once was on facebook to, it was a group i had joined, i have a few doggy groups on their but I think this one was lurcher lovers, a man had put up exact same thing as you saw, that he was sick of the pup weeing in the house, he had a few advice of people about trying some things to which he had said he has tried with no success, another man them commented saying give it a good old beating, worked for all mine. The original man then commented saying he does this to but with no luck. The convo carried on for abit i thought about commenting but was uffing and arring over it but then didnt need to has another man commented saying how sick they both were :) but it makes me soooooo angry :(

There is nothing wrong with kennelling dogs as long as they have others for company, but it is not practical in built up areas where the dogs will bark when they hear anything interesting.

Done the right way dogs may be more comfortable kennelled than shut in a house while owners are absent.

Of course this does not mean the dogs should be neglected to the extent of not getting the attention they need.

Unless you are out in the middle of nowhere in the average home kennels are unlikely to be practical and tolerance for dogs barking is minimal.

they can be useful even in a domestic situation.

For example I have a double kennel which is used as the bedroom for four of mine, and being just by the back-door/kitchen window it is ideal to provide shelter for puppies once going to play outside.

But it is never used when I am out, then the dogs are shut indoors with RAdio or TV turned on, to avoid noise disturbance to neighbours and for their security.

Nothing wrong with kennels per se; if you have a bitch in season then it can be sensible to kennel the dogs out of the 'danger zone' (not the bitch, obviously, as you don't want her scent travelling over the whole neighbourhood more than can be avoided). Also if you have to be out of the house all day it's better for dogs to be in a warm, secure kennel with attached run rather being shut indoors, possibly even in a crate, for hours alose, unable to get out to toilet.

I totally agree, and i appologise if anyone thought i was being funny about kennels, if that is what works for them. I agree that kennels are usefull and the dogs may love them. I just meant that the kennel i saw was not at all big enough to house all 4 big breed dogs (in my opinion), and i thought with such a large garden the kennel should ave been closer to the house so that the members of the household could hear things if need be, it was a very long and big garden and kennel was right at the bottom and kind of closed of even more from the house by having big bushes infront of it.

I don't understand why you mention a conflict of interest stops you posting some more practical advice. Just because it is going against somebodies dubious advice shouldnt stop you posting if it means saving a potential owner to do something that could harm a puppy.

You are doing nothing wrong by posting your view . If you are concerned your view is likely to offend a friend then to be honest if they gave that sort of advice in the first place I would question if I wanted to be associated with somebody who has that view and would take offense to your opinion. We all have different view on things but I draw a line when there is potential for harming an animal or human :-)

Your post made me smile, we leave our two in their "room" with their DAB radio - BBC2 dont you know!
When we moved we had a room built with a doggie shower, area for their crates, and a special non slip resin floor.

We dont have a radio, but they do and we leave it on so they will not be  distracted by outside noise. Next door have two small children and they say they never hear our dogs!

I do leave them with a dog minder on holidays abroad but in UK they go with us! Apart from the dog hair they are better behaved than my kids were and I would not allow ANYONE to beat my dogs, not even me!

Ive no real view on kennels as we are lucky enough to take ours to work with us!
