Topic Dog Boards / General / Astro turf - anyone used it with dogs?
- By Saffronsmith [gb] Date 21.11.11 14:22 UTC
My poor old once beautiful lawn looks like a tired old footie pitch.

Someone suggested astro turfing it - has anyone used it in conjunction with dogs?  Mine do like to dig on occasion - would it be strong enough to withstand? and also it does get piddled on a fair bit - will it smell?  And will muddy feet walking into the kitchen be a thing of the past?

TIA :-)

i have upto 10 dogs small and large belting across my garden and have astro turf down, for over two years now and it is brilliant, i disenfect it every couple of days through the summer and once a week in the winter it was so worth the money you can bleach it, zoflora on it or odour kill i would not go back to turf well mud after the winter was finished

Can you recommend a company please? I am fed up with the swamp as soon as we have any rain. Dont want to do the whole garden but fence off an area for any visiting dogs (groomer) and cover the worst parts of the swamp.

If you search for posts about artificial grass you will find some from chaumsong who has had her grass down for a few years now and has put the details in previous threads on the subject :-)

FAB info. should keep the husband quiet for a bit longer! what is it about men and lawns? mind you, I can do without the constant floor cleaning! thank you all

I love mine :-) It's so clean and neat in the winter, the dogs use it exactly the same way they use normal grass - racing around, going to the loo or sleeping on it and it still looks exactly the same as it did when I put it down.

The negatives are...

Price, but it seems to last forever.

Cleaning, unlike normal grass you do have to disinfect it or it smells. It doesn't take long though - just the same as hosing slabs down. I use whatever cleaning materials I have - mistral disinfectant (from ebay) or cheap bleach. It needs done every 2 or 3 days in the summer and every few weeks in the winter.

Installation, it's really really heavy!

The positives are no more cutting, no more mud and always looks neat :-)

I only have it down in my small back garden, if I could afford it I would do the front garden too but it's huge and would cost several thousand :-(  Maybe one day :-)

Sorry I forgot to say I got mine from asgoodasgrass - this is the stuff I have. I would avoid any that need sand infilling as I'd imagine you just end up with sand all over the house instead of mud :-)

I have had it down for 4 years now - brilliant, nothing seems to damage it - I live on the South Coast in Hampshire, try "all seasons lawns" thats who I used
