Hubby says that looks like excess catch being thrown overboard, as you can see that fish has been gutted (slit from vent to middle).

It looks like a fin to me :-)

I thought it was likely to be dead already as well, Possibly because my dogs excel at catching dead rabbits. They seem to hunt them down regularly.
I also wonder if a large cod is likely to be so close to the coast, I doubt the dog would go very far out.

For sure.  A fish that size would have been putting up a hell of a fight as he brought it ashore................. or tried to bring it ashore :)

My GR would end up in France if I didn't keep calling him back in towards the shore :-) A few years ago our local lifeboat went out to rescue a dog that had swum two miles out to sea - my mum rang me when she heard it on the news to see if it was Harley :-)

He has never brought me back a fish from the sea but has deposited a rather large, frantically flapping carp in my lap which he "retrieved" from the bottom pond in the garden.

LOL - I think it was a year or so ago, a Boxer had to be rescued by the lifeboat near where I used to live on the coast, after swimming after a ball that was sailing to France on the tide!

Then, years ago now, there was the incredible Labrador that fell overboard in the Solent near the Isle of Wight, and managed to swim home... think it was near Lymington or nearby.

Your husband is right--and anyway isn't cod a deep sea fish, a live one would never be washed up in the surf.
