i moved into the place we are in now over a year and half ago, and got a really cheap carpet just to put down over the winter etc, now we are looking into replacing it for either wood flooring or a good carpet, we have astro turf down for the dogs, so when they come in and out the house in the wet not a lot of mud, we have also some big dirt trapper rugs down on the carpet we got now, the type you see in shopping centers or hospitals just inside the front doors those types of dirt trapper carpets, i was toying with the idea of wooden floors, but thinking i would be the one constantly mopping them and with hairy dogs thought of all the little tumbleweeds blowing across the floor and under the units, then carpet would need to buy a good carpet cleaner, warmer on the feet, dog hair clings to it so just hoover it up.
What do most people have and why if you do not mind me asking

Wooden flooring in almost all the rooms and tiles in others.Looks almost like new after 4 years.Easy to keep clean with quick brush, hoover and mop.Would never go back to carpets athough I suppose it's about personal preference.

Wooden floors and slate tiles in most areas downstairs apart from our bedroom (which is downstairs)

Then stairs carpeted then rest of bedrooms and ensuite have wood or tiled.

I would never go back to carpets where the girls are allowed as it just attracted dirt and also kept the doggie smell if they were still slightly damp even though the carpets were shampooed alot.

The foots are easy to keep clean with a brush or Hoover then a quick floor cleaners with spray then a full mop once a week.

I would looooove carpets but I hate the thought of doggy smells.  I can barely have cushions!!! and even they need to go in the machine every other week.
I have laminate everywhere except the stairs and I couldn't change it.  The tumbleweeds are bad but because the hair doesn't stick to anything, it's easy to hoover.  I have 4 kids, 4 dogs and a cat.  We are very outdoorsy and my dogs get walked up hill/down dale but it's so easy to keep clean.
Only thing I hate, my boy is quite sweaty and he leaves sweaty feet prints all over my clean floors! Yuck!haha.

Vinyl.  I like wood but not the upkeep to keep it looking as nice as I'd like it to :-P and laminate would be too slippy for Tia.  Plus vinyl is quick and spillages can't go through the cracks (very important for a clumsy mare like me).

Not had carpet in the house apart from the landing for nearly 4 years now - it was hard enough keeping it clean with 4 dogs back then but Soli was incontinent also and she'd knackered the carpets before I'd got her stabilised on meds.

I've just now (literally, just now!) put carpet back on the stairs but only on the treads (skint so got a cut-off strip long enough to do that for £8 and it did the bare bit of the landing too), that is purely a safety thing because of Tia's legs - I like the look of carpeted stairs but detest the cleaning side, I find them an absolute PITA.  Oh well!

I'm in the minority, as prefer carpet, warmer but most importantly our dogs don't slip. Previously had wooden floors and the dogs ricochet off the walls & furniture, back injuries are a concern in the breed and I've known of dogs suffer serious injury when back legs slipped cornering too fast indoors.

Yes need to hoover most days and the occasional clean but would not go back to wood while dogs live in the house.

I'm with you. :-) Hard floors are chilly and institutional - carpets are warm and homely.
