Gosh I haven't had tablet for years, I used to buy it from the motorway services(boosted my energy on the long drive) on my way up to Dundee but it never tasted as good as my Mum made when we were kids.

You can add peppermint oil for a different taste.

Our newsagent sells it, one of the customers makes it for her. Mmmmmmmmmmmm ;-)

Wow, that takes me back. My dad used to make it when we were little. Never quite managed to get mine right the way he did. Can't ask him now, he's been gone such a long time. I'm going to try your recipe Merlot and see if I can rediscover my dad's touch.

Ooh I do love tablet. You can often get quite nice stuff at country fairs etc, but I've only ever found one place that did really yummy chocolate tablet and they've stopped. :-(

Thorntons sell it... http://www.thorntons.co.uk/p/Bags/4171.html

Id say its as good as any Ive tasted and my Mum has made it for us all my life.

That's a good idea, though I thought I read somewhere Thorntons were going bust? I must have a look next time I'm in town nearby and see if there's one still there.

I'm already porky enough these days, goodness knows what I'd look like if I did that :-o

Peppermint tablet......chocolate tablet.......I can hear my gran spinning in her grave.

From memory that recipe is on the money, apart from all that vanilla malarky, but I don't think it's cooked enough if the mixture is still gooy when you do the water test, from what I remember, the mixture had to form into quite a firm ball.
My uncle found this out to his cost when he thought he could get away with putting the tablet in the fridge to set, he gave my cousins a bit each for their play-piece, tablet being what it is the stuff had thawed and was running out the bottom of their school bags half way through RE lol.
The pan is washing up hell to clean afterwards.

Yes, I've had it from Thorntons - but they don't do chocolate, do they? As soon as people make chocolate fudge it turns squishy.

Tooolz, I now want your dogs AND your Mum - mine never cooks any more. :-( :-D

Fiona I make it and sell it for our annual charity every week at class, so it must be good! 4oz butter 2lb granulated sugar, i cup milk, 1 tin condensed milk. melt altogether, stir constantly to prevent burning, till it looks like the moon (funny bubbles) then take of hea and beat till going sugary at side of pan. then enjoy!
