Over about the last week Ben has developed an intermittent cough, he chuffs a few times then is fine, it hasn't happened during or after exercise, he was of for a short jog on Saturday with my friend without so much as a wheeze, the few times he's done it he's either been walking quietly on the lead ( not pulling ) or standing about, it always happens outside. He hasn't been in contact with any dogs other than his housemates ( both fine ) so not sure if kennel cough could be the culprit, although he has been walked where other dogs walk, he was also wormed with Panacur about 4 months ago. Any idea's ?.

I hear there is a lot of KC around but its usually described as a hacking cough ...

Coughing can disguise other underlying problems so if it was me I would have a health check at the vets.

Trip to vet, mention lung worm to them? When Zuma had it it was just a huffy-clear the throat- cough.

im off to the vets with puggy later for the same reason,he has had a snotty nose for a couple of weeks,nothing bad or i wouldhave got him there sooner,just the odd snotty sneeze,but he is coughing more,george coughs every day and has done all his life,so there is nothing new there  and i do physio on him to help clear it,but recently i noticed when he is resting or at night time,he is doing 2 types of cough alot more often,the first is the hack cough which brings up stuff into his mouth and the other is the huff huff cough,its been coming on very very slowly so its not been easy to spot,he is eight and a half now and has lost alot of muscle tone on the back etc,so yes,i know how you feel,i for one dont think this is going to be good news for puggy,sorry for jumping in on your thread,

It is difficult isn't it - just came on here for the same reason.  Meg has no other symptoms - apart from bringing up some food about a week ago for a day but yesterday morning and this morning she has woken up and started exactly the same sort of cough as Joanne reports.  She ate a lot of grass yesterday afternoon and made herself sick.  She hasn't had anything for 3 years - then because she had had her kennel cough vaccine I wasn't sure whether it was kennel cough or not. I haven't had her vaccinated for that since.  In the end I asked the vet to give me medication for lungworm.  The cough disappeared.  Here we are at the weekend - not sure what to do.  There is nothing for the vet to see.  Do I isolate her or not?  Got agility class tomorrow and club on Monday night. 

Didn't make that plain - the cough was only first thing in the morning.

Hope Puggy's ok, even if it is her heart she can still be ok, my friend really thought she was going to lose her cat earlier in the year with a dickie heart, she's now on Fortiker and is back to her old self.

Ben's on a course of Panakur, his heart sounded fine.

Sorry to hear that Joanne's dog has a dicky heart - hope she is OK.  I have phoned vets to be told that Meg's cough is probabally early stage kennel cough :-( 

I'm taking my old man to the vets this aft as he has cough.  He only starts coughing when he's active and is fine when he's resting. Hope it's not a dodgy ticker :(

Went vets with puggy,the vet has put him on a strong course on antibiotics for 10 days,he has a chest infection,he sneezed a load of green snot at her which confirmed it,she reckons its secondry to his teeth problems as his teeth are falling out and he had some nasty abcesses which were treated  a little while back,she listened to his heart and said it was srtong and steady,but we need to go back in 10 days if no improvement,i worry so much as he had a fit last month as well :(
Hopefully tonight will be a little easier

Great news :=), aren't we awful for worrying ! my friend had a scare just yesterday, she was convinced her dog Algie had a tumour in his mouth, for the vet to tell her he either had an infection or had caused trauma in his mouth and the small lump was actually his swollen Jacobson Organ.

So Celli - did the vet give you treatment for lungworm?  How is the cough now?

Yes, he's on panacur, haven't heard him cough again, but it was very infrequent .
