Particularly for other Aussie owners - but all contributions gratefully received :) Pup (8 months) has always had a bit of a bark at strangers - but now she is bigger it is getting a bit of a problem particularly when she is on a lead :( We had a big problem with older dog (rescue) doing this - and it took a lot of stopping !! Now when pup does it, older dog sometimes joins in making not only a noise (particularly when walking at 9.30pm down the road) but two pulling dogs. I know that Aussies aren't the best with strangers - but before this gets out of hand have you any suggestions. I usually try to hold her muzzle and say 'Quiet', but it isn't very effective :)
Thanks
Daisy
Hi Daisy,
I had this with my old aussie. He was worse when walked with my other dog, so I walked them seperately. The thing that worked for me was when people were approaching me, I made him sit and by using a really interesting bit of food, I taught him the command ''watch me''. I would keep his attention on me, while they passed and if he didn't bark, give him lots of praise and the food. It took a couple of weeks for him to learn, but then he used to automatically sit when someone approached. I made sure I used something he didn't usually have like liver so he knew what he was getting was special, and learnt the reason for getting it. You are right though, aussies are naturally cautious with strangers, well usually, the two I have at present, love everyone!!!!! but all I can say is, distraction worked for me.
Hope that helps.......

Hi Daisy
I've had the same experience as you, and, like Gabrielle, have had to, for a short while, take them out separately, in order to get the "look at me" command firmly in their brains! Now, I can take them both out together again - although I do use the "Gentle leader" halters without them pulling I have a "duff" shoulder from time to time, and I can walk both of them without any strain.
They are more likely, on spotting another dog, to sit down & wait for their treats now!!!

Many thanks for the advice - I'll be making some liver biscuits tomorrow :) Older dog responded very well to a shaky can, but has had no affect on pup. She isn't at all aggressive - she has a lovely nature. I'll let you know how we get on. :)
Thank you
Daisy
